I'm stuck for a name for our little girl. I want something pretty but a bit unusual and I think I like the name Romilly but can't decide if it's a bit too uncommon. What do you think? I'm also not sure of a middle name but thinking it needs to be a one-syllable name so that it's not too much of a mouthful?

I like it. I love the nn Romy.

Not spelled the same, but it's a suburb of Stockport so something to bear in mind.

I'm from Romily...no longer live there, but most of my friends and family live there (or in Bredbury and Woodley) 😍

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 12/02/2023 20:10

It's a surname to me. I always think of Esmond Romilly, which isn't a bad association at all but I struggle to see it as a girl's name.

Irrelevantdata · 12/02/2023 20:12

Lovely name, there was a Romilly in a book I loved as a teenager so it's always been on my list.

KirstenBlest · 12/02/2023 20:13

No. It's a surname. Jessica Mitford's first husband's surname.

SpringIntoChaos · 12/02/2023 20:14

*Romiley 🤦‍♀️ My fat fingers 🤣

OP I forgot to say...I love it as a name too (used to have a bit of a girl crush on Romilley Weeks 😍☺️)

Exactly this.

Shirley and Beverly were surnames / place names as well, before they became popular girls' names. Hilary / Hillary is similar. Romilly is just another example of quite a common tradition in the English language, it just doesn't have the same popularity.

FredinBread · 12/02/2023 20:50

Love it!

Hear it more and more. Normally would say 3 syllables is too frill but this seems like a fresh Emily type. Would be on the shortlist

Bichette · 12/02/2023 20:54

I like it.
Also Romy and Ramona.

This is the funniest reason to dislike a name I have ever ever seen here. Beyond parody. Brava.

Hazelnup · 12/02/2023 21:08

I like it

Rach247 · 12/02/2023 21:09

Love Romilly but Romy reminds me of Boris Johnson.

DaveSpud · 12/02/2023 21:11

I prefer Romy ☺

Pegsmum · 12/02/2023 21:12

I love it.

itsgettingweird · 12/02/2023 21:12

I like it.

I know a little girl called Romany and I like that too.

wheresmyshoe · 12/02/2023 21:14

Love it, my ace friend has this name, we use Romy for short.

hekissedmybottom · 12/02/2023 21:16

Yes, but I'm a Trekkie.

SellFridges · 12/02/2023 21:20

I love it, but have confirmation bias. Mine is 12 this week. She’s known as Rom, which we never planned for - we assumed she would be Romy.

She still likes it, as do we.

LauraPausini · 12/02/2023 21:27

Slightly biased because we have an older daughter called Romilly and know a younger Romilly as well. It jumped out as an interesting name and suits our daughter really well - no issues with pronunciation or confusion with other names.

It helped that there is the political correspondent, Romilly Weeks, so it is maybe an unusual but established girls' name.

nameXname · 12/02/2023 21:31

Hilary is not a place name. It's an ancient Greek and/or Roman word meaning 'cheerful'.

Shirley is a surname. Yes, it was oiginally derived fom a place name but that was not its usage at the time it became a popular name, in the 19th cent.

motleymop · 12/02/2023 21:37

It always makes me think of Romulus and Remus, but I suspect I'm in the minority with that!!

FKATondelayo · 12/02/2023 21:38

I love it and it was on my list. Romilly Street in Soho was where DH proposed. Nickname was going to be Romy (like Romy Schneider).
Had two boys so never happened.

The Hitler/Mitford digression on this thread has to be one of the most hilariously paranoid over-analysis I have ever come across on the baby name board. And that's saying something.

FKATondelayo · 12/02/2023 21:39

I like Romane too - as in Romane Bohringer.
