Pippa

I absolutely love Pippa but I'm not sure I would want it as a full name. I quite like Penelope but I'm not sure if it would shorten to Pippa well. I also very much dislike Philipa. Any suggestions? X

I love Pippa, I would use it as a full name.

Kate8990 · 12/02/2023 01:34

I like Penelope and Penny for short

NuffSaidSam · 12/02/2023 01:37

I like Pippa.

I love Penelope.

But they're two separate names.

Do you like Poppy or Piper?

Jadviga · 12/02/2023 01:40

I definitely wouldn't use it as a full name, she'd get called Pippa Pig all the time. And if she happens to be chubby the pig jokes will just be that much worse.

I took a look at P names but didn't see many that would shorten organically to Pippa. Maybe Piper ?

And it doesn't shorten to Pippa but I do like Phaedra.

FishEagleonthelake · 12/02/2023 01:51

If you feel like Pippa is more of a nickname than a proper name but you quite like Penelope, maybe you should just opt for Penelope instead?

DramaAlpaca · 12/02/2023 01:56

It's said all the time on here, but Pippa is not a name that travels well thanks to its derogatory meaning in other languages.

If you already know this, sorry to repeat.

Pippa doesn't work as a diminutive of Penelope though. It's definitely from Philippa.

plumduck · 12/02/2023 04:56

I know a pippa. It's lovely.

Twoinapod · 12/02/2023 06:31

@Jadviga its peppa pig, not pippa.

@lolarm I know a Pippa, that’s their full name. They don’t have any issues with it. It’s a lovely name

Pinkdafodils · 12/02/2023 09:45

Pippa definitely does not travel well. I also find it twee and childish sounding.

Personally I love Philippa.

IsadoraQuagmire · 12/02/2023 10:00

Pippa is short for Philippa though. Everyone would assume that that was their actual name.

fruitandfibreg · 12/02/2023 11:59

I know 2 pippas that are just Pippa. I really like it

MarthaMumbles · 12/02/2023 12:01

Pippa stands alone as a name now I think. It's lovely.

timoteigirl · 12/02/2023 15:13

I like it, it is very cheerful the same as Daisy or Pollyanna. But the association with Peppa Pig is too much.

amicrazy111 · 12/02/2023 15:20

I have a Philippa nn Pippa/Pip. So I'm clearly bias Grin If introduced as Pippa, most assume her full name is Philippa.

Have met another Pippa who was just Pippa.

Not too fussed about the travel as she mainly goes by Pip anyway 🤷

I have also met a Penelope who went by Pip but think Pippa is too big a stretch.

amicrazy111 · 12/02/2023 15:21

Oh and the Peppa Pig thing has been a non-issue, I think twice at nursery a child called her Peppa and was corrected and that was the end of it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Luredbyapomegranate · 12/02/2023 16:18

I like it but think it’s too cutesy as a full name

Perdita for some reason sprung to mind, but if Penelope works for you do that, people have all sorts of short forms. Although I like Philippa myself

Purpletopaz42 · 12/02/2023 19:54

I don't personally like Pippa as a full name but I think it would make a great nickname for Penelope. I think Phillipa is more common but it easily lends itself to Penelope and Pippa is actually listed as a nickname for Penelope, on a well known baby naming website.

Jadviga · 13/02/2023 02:20

@Twoinapod I know it's Peppa but it's close enough to Pippa for bullying/mockery potential.

I don't feel strongly about the name either way, if OP likes it and isn't bothered by the Pig connection then great, but it can't hurt to point it out before she makes a final decision.

OP, something that sounds vaguely similar came to mind, how about Petra ?

shiningcuckoo · 13/02/2023 04:47

I think it's nice. I know a Pipi and that's grown on me.

Blueuggboots · 13/02/2023 05:12

Phillipa. I have a friend who is known as Pippa but her real name is Phillipa.

gettingalifttothestation · 13/02/2023 09:17

How about phoebe with pippa as nickname

Pinkdafodils · 13/02/2023 12:56

shiningcuckoo · 13/02/2023 04:47

I think it's nice. I know a Pipi and that's grown on me.

Pipi is the word for wee in many European languages Blush

Dreamingof3 · 13/02/2023 19:50

I have a Pippa. No one has ever asked if it's short for philippa and no one has ever referred to her as Peppa pig (or Pippa pig, or anything pig related) and she's right in the age bracket for growing up with Peppa pig around

I know it means different things in other languages...but that doesn't hugely bother us as we don't live there or speak those languages 🤷

user1492757084 · 14/02/2023 08:09

Pippa is sweet. I like it as a nick name and as a full name.
What is the full name of Pippi Longstocking? Looked it up.
It is Pippilotta xxname xxname Peppermint Longstocking - so they are not useful to use!

I love Philippa - and I prefer Pippa to be the nick/used name.
It means horse lover. Rose is also associated with horses.
Philippa Rose - Pippa, Rosie, Filly

Penelope is most often shortened to Penny but it also lends itself to Pippi or Pippa and it is your choice.
