Kitty or Cicely

Kitty wouldn’t be short for Catherine/Katherine, just as a stand-alone name like Lady Kitty Spencer.

Cicely pronounced Siss-ell-ee not Sess-ell-ee. I’m not sure if people would want to spell it Sicily or if I’m overthinking things!

Thank you in advance :)

Kitty

Twizbe · 30/01/2023 13:13

Cecily. Kitty is cute on a baby but not so much an adult.

KirstenBlest · 30/01/2023 13:46

Kitty. Cicely is nice but it will written as Cecily a lot, and Cecily is too Cecil-y

Kitty could be short for Christina or Christabel if you aren't keen on Catherine/Katherine/Katharine

Fedupofdiets · 30/01/2023 13:48

Cicely - DD 19 has a friend called this and I always think how nice it is whenever she says her name. Kitty is nice for a child but too twee for an adult.

fantasmasgoria1 · 30/01/2023 13:49

Kitty definitely. I think it's fine for child and adult. It's different.

Reclining · 30/01/2023 13:49

Cicely. Kitty doesn't pass the CV test

HoldingTheDoor · 30/01/2023 13:49

Kitty is much nicer.

LCforlife · 30/01/2023 13:50

I like Cecily but not Cicely. I also like Kitty but think they should have a registered first name like Katherine or something if they don't want to use Kitty.

roarfeckingroarr · 30/01/2023 13:51

Cecily. It's pronounced Sicily by lots of people but is the proper spelling.

VenusClapTrap · 30/01/2023 13:54

Kitty. Cicely is nice too though.

HuntingoftheSnark · 30/01/2023 14:06

DD 25 has a friend Kathryn whose BC name is Kitty. She decided to change her "known as" name at university because she didn't feel that she would be taken seriously as an adult. So I'd go for Cecily.

Swingingonastar77 · 30/01/2023 14:20

Cicely - it’s beautiful!

KirstenBlest · 30/01/2023 14:22

@roarfeckingroarr , Cicely is a plant, Cecily is the feminine form of Cecil. They are both correct but have different meanings.

MashedUpPotatoes · 30/01/2023 14:27

Not a fan of Kitty so by default I’d choose Cicely. If it was Katie instead of Kitty I’d choose that.

ChocChipOwl · 30/01/2023 14:36

I don't like kitty. Conjures up a rather unpleasant image and it seems such a 'hard' name to me

CastleTower · 30/01/2023 15:19

I don't think I could name someone just Kitty, so on that basis Cecily.

I know a Kitty whose name is Caterina.

Cecily. It's pronounced Sicily by lots of people but is the proper spelling.

Hi, no I definitely mean Cicely. It’s a Victorian name, from the herb Sweet Cicely. Namesakes include Cicely Mary Barker who wrote the Flower Fairy books and Cicely Mary Saunders who founded hospices.

Cicely

Consufed · 30/01/2023 15:40

Kitty

WilsonMilson · 30/01/2023 15:42

If you’re going with Kitty, I’d use it as a shortened version of Katherine, Katarina etc. Fine as a nickname, not great as a stand alone.

Cecily I love. Cicely looks like you’ve just spelled Cecily wrong. And/or you will get a lot of Sicily.

Yesthatismychildsigh · 30/01/2023 15:42

Kitty is awful. It’s a nickname for a cat. Also makes me think of Cliff Richard.

FineThings · 30/01/2023 15:51

Cicely. And I def see it as a real name not a version of Cecily. It's lovely.
Kitty Spenser's first name is Katherine, according to the Independent

AdaColeman · 30/01/2023 15:52

Cicely is lovely. I like the background about the flower fairies book too.
I don't think people will spell it Sicily.

EzzieM · 30/01/2023 15:53

Kitty is cute on a child but on an adult woman it’s got porn star associations. Not something I’d give my daughter when there are so many other beautiful names to choose from.

Cicely is better but sounds just like the Italian island and she’ll be forever correcting the spelling from ‘Cecily’. It’ll be a constant source of irritation for her. Mean.

You can do better OP, there are many far better names than these.

If you’re mad keen on one of these, then give her the legal name Katherine and call her Kitty and let her choose whether she wants to use it as a grown up.

RoseMartha · 30/01/2023 16:00

Cicely, as Kitty is fine for a nickname not so much an actual first name.
