Kitty or Cicely

Kitty wouldn’t be short for Catherine/Katherine, just as a stand-alone name like Lady Kitty Spencer.

Cicely pronounced Siss-ell-ee not Sess-ell-ee. I’m not sure if people would want to spell it Sicily or if I’m overthinking things!

Thank you in advance :)

Kitty

I like Cicely (which will always remind me of Katy in What Katy Did's best friend), but I think people will assume it's Cecily, if that's likely to annoy you. (And I think people assuming she's called after a Meditarranean island would irritate me.)

Kitty is good. No need for Katherine, IMO -- it's a standalone feisty old lady name where I'm from, and all the better for it.

Twoinapod · 30/01/2023 20:39

Kitty definitely. Really don’t like Cicely. Sounds like someone with a stutter saying silly.

Hobbesmanc · 30/01/2023 20:42

I love both cicely as in the herb and Cecily or Cecile.

Kitty is fine. I know lots of Katherines,Catherines, Kathryns who go by Cat. So Kitty is fine.

LaLuz7 · 30/01/2023 20:44

Neither

FrownPrincess · 30/01/2023 20:51

As pp have said, Kitty is cute for a child but doesn’t sound right for an adult.

I like Cicely and immediately think of the herb. I also like Cecilia.

Luredbyapomegranate · 30/01/2023 22:02

Cicely is nice, although I prefer Cecily - it’s punchier.

Kitty only as a nn for Katherine or Christina.. it’s too like Kitten for a grown woman, except as a pet (kitten) name - Kat or Kit is nice mind you.

DramaAlpaca · 30/01/2023 22:52

Cicely is nice, though I do like Cecily better.

Kitty is sweet as a diminutive for a small child, but not on an adult.

I love Cicely Mary together. It is so lovely.
It is my favourite of the two.

Kitty is well known enough to suit a grown woman, especially when teamed with a classic second name. ie Kitty Elizabeth.

Both names remind me of the 1920s They are of the same ilk as Miss Phryne Fisher, Grace Kelly, Sibyl and Joan.

freesia86 · 31/01/2023 08:37

I really love Cecilia as another option. I prefer Kitty to Cicely, Catherine/Katarina are both lovely names for a nn Kitty.

Riverlee · 31/01/2023 08:43

Kitty, purely for the reason I wouldn’t want to spend my life spelling out Cicely.

Naming someone Kitty is no difference to the current trend for the name Teddy, and actually is far nicer.

BungleandGeorge · 31/01/2023 08:52

I like Kitty better. They are both fine though

i think there will be much confusion with cicely. Both being called Cecily and spelt sicily. If I heard the name I’d probably presume it was spelt like the country because of the trend to name babies after places.

17caterpillars1mouse · 31/01/2023 09:57

Cicely is lovely. Unusual but lovely. I really like it

I like Kitty as a shortening for Katherine or Kathleen but not on its own. Too twee

Fuckstix · 31/01/2023 10:02

Cicely is beautiful! Really like Cicely Mary.

Kitty is a sweet nickname for a lot of nice options such as Katherine or Catriona but I don't like it as standalone. I think there's too much scope for it really not to suit the bearer and for her to hate it.

Fuckstix · 31/01/2023 10:03

Kathleen is nice too

nettie434 · 31/01/2023 10:04

Ciceley is lovely. Really unusual, although it was more popular in the past. Ciceley Saunders is a good role model too.

nettie434 · 31/01/2023 10:06

Whoops - I've added an extra e. Same applies to Cicely.

RuthW · 31/01/2023 12:19

Cicely. Kitty is a nick name.
