Can we really name our baby girl this?

Hi all,

I am currently 8 and a half months pregnant, myself and DP have been going back and forth on names for a while until we agreed on this around 2 months ago.

The name we would like to use for our girl is Halo.

Our baby's surname will be Raye

Is it too out there? We both love the name but would love to know what others think.

What if your kid wants to become a barrister or an investment banker? You’re precluding her from a number of professions or forcing her to change her name by depol aged 17, pre-University applications…

OhMonDieux · 20/01/2023 09:18

WTF?

Halo is not a name.

What makes parents think of these weird names for their kids?

What's wrong with all the thousands of names out there that won't make her a laughing stock?

HandsOffMyCarrierBags · 20/01/2023 09:19

Seems strange. What about Hero

HarLace1 · 20/01/2023 09:20

The surname is very nice, you could make a lovely name with it but I'm not sold by Halo as a first. Why not use it as a middle name? So for instance, Olivia Halo Raye. Sounds better. (Olivia is one of my fave names lol)

OhMonDieux · 20/01/2023 09:20

You say you 'thought of the name'.
Well yes, it is a noun = a name for something, that angels have hovering above their heads, but not a human being.

FGS get a grip.

baublingon · 20/01/2023 09:22

Sounds trying too hard / cheap. If you're really set on it, use it as a middle name. I like unusual names too but novelty factor isn't enough on its own.

BobDear · 20/01/2023 09:23

it's not ugly, but it's a bit 'North Kardashian' to my ears.

Halo Raye sounds like a made up rapper name.

In its most current form, Halo is a video game

ancientgran · 20/01/2023 09:25

I know someone who chose a way out there name for their child, it worked for him as he had a very strong, cheeky sort of personality. I think it is a gamble as it could have been really hard for a quiet introvert. Trouble is we don't know at this stage if she will have the personality to embrace it or to cringe.

Sorry not much help.

hot2trotter · 20/01/2023 09:26

Silly name. Heightened by the fact some Love Island morons also want to name their baby that.

fabricSilver · 20/01/2023 09:28

QwertyBert · 20/01/2023 06:09

I’m sure I read that some love island couple are calling their baby Halo. Molly May and Tyson fury I think?

Yes I saw that didn’t the company who did their nursery post a picture or something ?

JimHensonWasAGenius · 20/01/2023 09:29

Well it might not be that "unique" if this story is anything to go by and I would hate for my DD to be associated with some reality tv non-entitities kid.

3peassuit · 20/01/2023 09:29

Halo sounds quite sweet but with Raye as surname, it’s too much.

Zilla1 · 20/01/2023 09:30

Hi OP, I expect your DC will be special because of their name and personality. It won't take a name to make them special. Good luck.

snowlolo · 20/01/2023 09:30

I don't think Halo is a great choice for reasons outlined by many previous posters.

As an alternative, Hayley Raye is very cool I think!

BiggerBoyMadeMeDoit · 20/01/2023 09:32

What about Hayley as an alternative?

If you use a word as someone's as a name then it becomes a name. That's how names work. All names were once just words or strings of letters put together and used as names.

I don't think Halo is great with Raye, though.

Folklore9074 · 20/01/2023 09:35

I like Halo in general and I reckon the amount of pisstaking in school will depend on where you live. Affluent urban area fine. Where I grew up in the north east you’d get ripped. Crucially though the name dosn’t work with your surname. Halo Raye is a bit too Hallo/Hello Raye I reckon.

musingsinmidlife · 20/01/2023 09:36

Agree with the suggestion. Call her Hayley and then nickname her Halo or Hales. That way she has a real name and you can still use the nickname you like.

Callling her Halo is like calling a kid Pitchfork. It is a noun associated with saintliness and that is a pretty heavy burden to put on a kid. The other association is a violent video game.

And I agree that with your last name it will sound like Hello Ray

Poppygoestheweasel · 20/01/2023 09:39

Fine if she keeps her name for life but if she marries someone in the future and she is then Halo Smith, or Halo Jones it isnt quite so exotic or different.

Wouldn't be for me, but each to their own.

golden1989 · 20/01/2023 09:41

I actually like this, and at the end of the day it's totally your decision

Bournetilly · 20/01/2023 09:43

It’s awful

Tamarindtree · 20/01/2023 09:43

All these alternate names in an effort to be trendy are all well and good when the kid is small and you can dress it to look hip and cool to go with the name but try to imagine them as a fat, thirty five year old working in some bog standard job and it’s all a bit cringe.

tara66 · 20/01/2023 09:48

It will be a burden for your child all her life.

Dramaalpacas · 20/01/2023 09:50

Could you call her Hayley and have ‘Halo’ as a cute family nickname?

topshotta · 20/01/2023 09:51

Apparently Molly-Mae is naming her baby Halo so it'll probably get really popular
