Agnes & Agnus - Yay or Nay?

Am I the only one that find these names terrible?

Does this “Agn” start reminds you of the words angry & ugly somehow merged into one word which apparently is a name ?!

Plus that my tongue is partially strangled….

Sorry I meant Agnes & Angus , not Agnus

Well, I like both of those names, so I guess I don't agree with you.

piscosours · 17/01/2023 22:57

I like them too. Also Agnes starts with Ag and Angus starts with An so it doesn't make sense!

UsingChangeofName · 17/01/2023 23:00

I personally am not really keen on Agnes, but only because it is "an old lady name" to me. I suspect it fits right in with so many other "old lady names" used in recent years.

Angus is nothing like it though. I quite like it, although would probably only use if I were Scottish. It would get a bit waring people asking you about your Scottish heritage if you didn't have any.

Whataretheodds · 17/01/2023 23:02

No, they don't. I like both names.

Teethingpainagain · 17/01/2023 23:02

I find them having such a harsh sounding!

A friend chose one the two for their DC and I felt so sorry for it…

I literally can’t think of a name with a more harsh, unfriendly sounding!

Maybe Seth could go into the league as well, which sounds like Harry Potter speaks snake language…

I don't like Agnes but I like Angus.

loupielou1 · 17/01/2023 23:04

Reminds me of Mrs brown boys

UniversalTruth · 17/01/2023 23:07

I thought you were suggesting twin names, in which case it's a hard no.

As individual names, they're fine. If people have chosen them for their DC they must like them so hopefully your dislike was discreet!

EyesOnThePies · 17/01/2023 23:08

Is the teething pain keeping you up at night and making you irritable?

Fluffluff · 17/01/2023 23:09

Each to their own.
I like Angus but not Agnes .
I don't like names that sound like a noise .. josh..Seth..

twinkletwinkle89 · 17/01/2023 23:12

I agree. Awful names xx

Kanaloa · 17/01/2023 23:14

I don’t like either but I do like Magnus, which has a similar sound to Angus & Agnes. Weird that I don’t like either of them!

I don’t agree that Seth is harsh though, I find it a really gentle name. I wanted it for DS but couldn’t use it because in my area Seth becomes Seff, Beth is Beff etc. And that would annoy me every day.

chocolateismyjam · 17/01/2023 23:15

Lord, from the title I thought you were proposing to have two kids named this 😐

Thankfully not!

I don't like Agnes much, but Angus is OKish

ODFOx · 17/01/2023 23:23

I like Agnes, Angus and Seth.
Wouldn't life be dull if we all liked the same things?

margegunderson · 17/01/2023 23:36

Must all names be pretty and twinkly?

junebirthdaygirl · 18/01/2023 00:36

I don't like Agnes but love Angus. In lrish Agnes is called Una..pronounced Oonagh and love that name.

Twoinapod · 18/01/2023 05:02

I love Angus, unfortunately I have no Scottish heritage so it would be strange to use it. Agnes isn’t my taste but I don’t like old lady names.

Saying you feel sorry for your friends baby because they have one of those names though is a bit ridiculous. Says a lot about you as a person, I feel sorry for your friend.

MrNook · 18/01/2023 05:17

I like both. I don't find them angry or ugly.

I do think it's weird to start a thread just to slate the names though!

If someone's reading this and your DC have either name, I think they're lovely!

embolass · 18/01/2023 06:52

Both awful soz

LightHousePanda · 18/01/2023 09:08

I agree with you OP - also on the dislike of Seth.
I think Angus is softer than Agnes but still both have a negative reaction with me.

I know popular names are slated on here a lot and having spent time on naming boards like this I do find I'm bored of names like Sophia, Olivia, Isla etc but then I'd much much rather be Sophia L than solitary Agnes, and I think the average girl would feel the same.

LightHousePanda · 18/01/2023 09:09

I'm also glad you're not planning on naming your twins or children those two names 😂which is what i thought when i saw the title.

Mercurial123 · 18/01/2023 09:16

I really like both names.

scottishnames · 18/01/2023 10:28

Not angry or ugly at all. I like them both.
Angus = a Celtic young man god of love
Agnes = chaste. Not a bad virtue. Also associated with a smiliar sounding word meaning lamb (so gentle, pretty etc)

Traditionally, in many parts of Scotland Agnes is pronounced 'Annis'.

MerryChristmasToYou · 18/01/2023 12:17

I thought you were naming siblings.
Both names are fine. Not keen on Seth, mainly because of Seth Armstrong.
