Am I the only one that find these names terrible?

Does this “Agn” start reminds you of the words angry & ugly somehow merged into one word which apparently is a name ?!

Plus that my tongue is partially strangled….

I know a few people called Agnes, it's relatively popular in Cornwall. I think it's nice and not at all harsh.

I like both names but would definitely not use them for siblings. For one thing I would never give siblings the same initial anyway, for another these two names really are very similar in terms of letters and sounds, but most importantly of all, I think they have very different "feels" that kind of clash. Angus is rugged, outdoorsy and tough. Agnes is classic and dignified.

Angus does remind me of a rugged Scottish Doctor or vet with dark hair and blue eyes .

Someone very outdoorsy and windswept.
Does Mountain Rescue with a Collie minute n days off.
That sort of name.

Edit.. Where did “ Minute” come from?
that shouldn’t be there, it should be.” On days off”.

Why no edit button?!

Agnes and its reverse Senga are common in old ladies in Scotland - often shortened to Aggie. It's not a nice name. Angus on the other hand I love.

pantherrose · 21/01/2023 09:40

Agnes is quite popular in France and pronounced 'Anyess' which I think is softer and prettier.

inquisitorgeneral · 21/01/2023 13:02

To each their own.
I don't particularly like these names either - and I don't think that's an unpopular opinion given their current low rankings in England.

I don't come from a community where these names are popular or usual so maybe I just don't get the appeal.

Seems a bit weird to start a thread to slate two names that very few parents in England actually use.

Greeneyegirl · 21/01/2023 18:22

I dont mind Agnes or Angus but have similar feelings about Ethan. Such a harsh, thorny word

I like both. I don't find them angry or ugly.

I do think it's weird to start a thread just to slate the names though!

If someone's reading this and your DC have either name, I think they're lovely!

Thank you! I was feeling a bit sad reading all the hate for one of my DC's names.

Grin @oakleaffy

AliceMcK · 21/01/2023 20:10

Hate these nasty threads.

I think they are both lovely traditional names.

@KirstenBlest woooooow I've literally never seen an advert for Trevor mints, I just had to consult YouTube. Mind blown.

Laureatus · 22/01/2023 18:57

@KirstenBlest sigh, Trebor obv: stupid autocorrect!

BridieConvert · 28/01/2023 21:57

I'm not a fan of Agnes but I absolutely love Angus and would have called my son this if I didn't have 2 girls!
