Hello! We are looking for a boys name to go with our 3yo Theo (Theodore) and I have stumbled across the name Artie, I love it and don’t know any, just wondering what others thought of it as I can’t ask friends and family in case we use it! Thank you!

I know an Artie that is just an Artie and it's a fab name

PortiasBiscuit · 12/01/2023 07:52

Arthur is a better name for a CV, you can then call him what you like.

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 12/01/2023 07:54

Not sure how popular it is in their culture but I know a few Indian girls called Artie- never heard of any males unless it’s shortened for Arthur but I’ve only really known Art to be a thing

LetItGoHome · 12/01/2023 07:55

I would name him Art, then call him Artie as a pet name if you wish. I'm not a fan of cute names on grown men so I would give him the choice.

maddy68 · 12/01/2023 07:55

Love it

DarkNecessities · 12/01/2023 07:59

If you shorten Theodore to Theo already then why not go for Arthur but call him Artie.

Don’t worry about family members with the same name

Notparticularlyslappable · 12/01/2023 07:59

Artie Zipp from The Simpsons is instantly in my head! I'd swerve that one to be honest.

Arthur on birth certificate

DoYou · 12/01/2023 08:06

I like it. Danny Dyer has a son called Arty. I think I prefer the look of it with a Y rather than an IE.

Xmasgrinchywinchy · 12/01/2023 08:08

It’s fine no need for a longer name for the sake of it, nobody needs a choice of name, it’s just their name

Remaker · 12/01/2023 08:12

I’d only do it if you’re prepared to name him Arthur. I have friends who were given a nickname instead of a full name and they find it irritating as adults not to have the choice, especially as so many nicknames are cutesy and more suited to little kids than adults.

Bronnau · 12/01/2023 08:15

If you put Arthur on the BC, you can introduce him to everyone as Artie and then have no awkwardness with the other Arthurs in your life. It's a lovely name!

FlounderingFruitcake · 12/01/2023 08:43

Artie Zipp from the Simpsons! And round here all the kids do a holiday camp called Arty Party. So no, I don’t like it, sorry especially next to Theo/Theodore which is a cracking name!

KangarooKenny · 12/01/2023 08:44

Artie farty.

VenusClapTrap · 12/01/2023 08:45

Fine as a nickname but too childish as a stand-alone name on an adult.

ShesThunderstorms · 12/01/2023 08:50

If that's the name you want to call him the. It will be a standalone name. People on MN always seem to think you have to use a long version of a name on a birth certificate but in real life I know loads of kids with shortened versions of longer names and nobody bats an eyelid.
I think Artie is great!

HeBrokeMyNecklace · 12/01/2023 08:58

It's not a nickname. Not sure of the MN obsession with having a pretentious long name just "for when they're older". Artie will be all he knows and it is absolutely fine as an adult's name. Betty and Lily are seen as fine as names so don't see why this different.

I’d say the same about Betty, to be honest.

As a pp said Art as a full name is Irish and you could call him Artie then? I have to say I love Arthur as a name and Artie as the nickname.

But Artie will probably be what he goes by day to day anyway. So really it doesn’t matter and I think Artie as a name is something that will grow with him really well into adulthood!

rainbowstardrops · 12/01/2023 10:04

I really like it! I'm not that keen on Arthur but can understand using it if your Theo is actually Theodore, so Arthur is Artie.

But just use Artie if that's what you love!

I never really get the MN thing on here where you need to give children a 'decent' name for their CV etc. Each to their own though!

BreviloquentBastard · 12/01/2023 10:12

I know one Artie and he's actually an Artemis. Mum was a big fan of the Artemis Fowl books and had no idea Artemis is typically a girl's name, but the little lad suits it to the ground and has been Artie or Art to most since day 0.

Purplemagnolias · 12/01/2023 10:17

Artie is way too cutesy.

And Art is 🖼️ and not a name imo

Blendandmix · 12/01/2023 10:19

I've got a 1 year and I know a little Artie. I love it

Purplemagnolias · 12/01/2023 10:55

I'd hate it too. I'm glad to have a beautiful syllable name. Close family and friends sometimes shorten it to a 'cute' nickname

Purplemagnolias · 12/01/2023 10:56

3 syllable name
