Anyone else been surprised at what people in their lives have called their children?

Probably outing but I’ve never voiced my views on quite close family having a Jude and then choosing Jade. Nothing wrong with either name on its own (albeit I’m not keen on either personally) but together…🤔

I was a bit surprised when a cousin named their child the same as one of my DS. The same cousin also named their first child the same name as our other cousin's DS. So 4 children share 2 names. It's not like we're all distant relatives either 😂

My son in law has a first cousin with the same first name (mums are sisters)

Tadhg is an Irish name, pronounced Tie. I've taught someone (around 10 years ago) called Tye

That is not how you pronounce Tadhg.

it’s pronounced tie-gh

I had a Great Aunt Effie, christened Euphemia, and another called Eppie (Hephzibah). Both born in the 1880s. It made a change from all the Margarets and Katherines in the family tree anyway.

Il bite and give a clue someone you wear around your neck

Scarf? Neckerchief? Aaaahhh hold on .... Tie?! It's Tie, isn't it, or more likely Ty???

Elsanore · 09/01/2023 19:50

Not quite an item of clothing, it's an accessory, but my niece has a boy friend named Satchell !

I know an Effie in her early 20s; not short for Euphemia, but apparently based on her first name beginning with F ('Ef').

I usually enjoy unusual names even if they are not to my taste, but I thought Bacchus was a bit much.

InterestingUsernameTBC · 09/01/2023 19:57

My sister took 10 days to come up with the name Jessica. I was pretty surprised.

Probablymagrat · 09/01/2023 19:59

I know of a Penny-Dot. I thought just a pet name for Penelope Dorothy, but no, its just Penny-Dot.

Riverlee · 09/01/2023 20:04

Teddy always surprises me, when not a nickname for Edward, but they’re everywhere, for baby boys and dogs alike.

I once met a little girl whose first name was Clementine. Her parents shortened it to Clemmie, which I thought was sweet!

ter19 · 09/01/2023 20:05

No, but my step-mother has always given me a surprised/disapproving reaction with my child's names. DD1's name is Talia and when I told my step-mother her name while I was pregnant, she just opened her eyes real wide and nodded. I'm now pregnant again with DS1 and DD2 and told her that DD2's name would be Eleni and she just said "ooookay? Interesting choice?"

mauvish · 09/01/2023 20:06

Effie could also be short for Ifigenia/Ephegenia.

I did know a Euphemia but she was known as Mig (no idea why).

I've also known a Parsley.

@Nakedornotnaked Heaven-leigh!! Big Virginia Andrew’s fan do you think?!

Duckinghell80 · 09/01/2023 20:16

I know a Soya, a Kale and a Jaxon (I like the name Jackson just don’t really like the spelling)
I know of a few Roxannes too (all quite young children) I can’t help but burst into song or think of a prostitute when I hear the name 🫣

This is so common now. Clemmie sounds to me of phlegmy 🤮🤮

My 'D'SS called to announce the name of their new baby and the name is so ridiculous I though he had to be joking. DH said he had concerns and the next thing is apparently we 'hated' the name which we never said.

Long story short, because DH didn't fawn all over them for coming up with a name that will have the poor little fucker teased for the rest of her days, they cut us off. They tried to keep the massive amount of money they'd borrowed too the cheeky tossers.

Call your kids actual names folks.

Totalk · 09/01/2023 20:21

fak fak, and I am not joking!

Oh, you can’t post this and not share!

My cousins 3rd child. First two are Nicholas and Sarah no 3 arrived and she is called Filuca. I've got used to it now and really like it but I was surprised.

Friends named firstborn Caradoc. Really like it. His sister is Martha also surprised me as so commonplaxe comparative to brothers name. I was expecting something like Lowenna or Dierdre for her.

Wow. Chain sounds like he'd be a good playmate for my new cousin once removed, Hades... (wish I were joking)

Are we related? My cousin recently named her little boy Hades, I was shocked to say the least.

PeapodBurgundy · 09/01/2023 20:36

I've worked in childcare/education for around 20 years, and I've come across some absolute corkers!!

Years back there were Angels left, right and centre, The current trend is either Nevaeh or Nevaeh-Mai (Heaven/I am Heaven backwards).

I think the worst I've seen is Dolly Dot. She'll be in her late teens now.

Ex and I could agree on what to shorten DD's name to (named after somebody, but it's a long name), so we chose an Italian/French version rather than English. That gets questioned a lot.

Yes one of the children in the family has a ridiculous name, hes named after an item of clothing. I feel sorry for him as all the other kids in the family have normal names even his brother. When I've mentioned his name in passing to people always ask me to repeat the name.

I bet it is Blanket. That was the name of someone either in a real history book or a work of fiction. It is on the tip of my tongue (it might even have been the Diary of Adrian Mole!).
