Just out of interest really - is there a specific boy or girl name you just can’t stand?

@ladygindiva do you live in the uk? I have 4 school age children and have met 25+ young Isabel/Isobel/Izzy/Isabella's at their schools and clubs in the last 14 years.

One of my DC’s name is. I’m not surprised. I know what MN thinks of it. He likes his name though.

My name isn’t on the thread. But only because it’s so bad, it’s basically extinct in younger generations. It would appear within an instant on any ‘names that should never be revived’ thread. I’m never insulted by that. It’s a terrible name. Sounds crap. Even worse if you shorten it in any way. Of course it’s going to come up.

yeh my name too.

I hate Nora, always think nitty Nora, nora batty and blood nora.

choochooandspook · 02/01/2023 23:01

I also hate janice and Rachel, think janice is just so boring and don't know why Rachel

yaflouloci · 02/01/2023 23:07

Daniel.

Thankfully these have fallen out of fashion now but anything ending in the ‘web’ sound. So, Maureen, Doreen, Eileen, Pauline, Irene. They just sound so dreary.

yep agree with this

Marcipex · 02/01/2023 23:18

Junior; give him a name of his own fgs.

TheaBrandt · 02/01/2023 23:21

My poor grandmother had two dreadful names one mentioned in Name23 post. She absolutely detested both her names and was known by a lovely nickname. Whenever people solemnly announce a child was named after a grandmother I inwardly laugh mine would turn in her grave if any of us did that!

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 02/01/2023 23:21

@Cattenberg I briefly dated a Ralph. He used to refer to himself as Ralphie and it used to make me feel queasy. Never loved the name but he definitely made me dislike it.

Both mine and my daughter's name have made this list 🤨.

Every Elaine that I met was a bully of the 1st order. It's almost unbelievable how at every job I had, there's an Elaine that everyone avoids because she's a cow with control issues. And she'll be the only reason why I don't enjoy being at work. Sorry for the nice ones on here but I hate this name now. Karens have got the twatty reputation so unfairly, every Karen I've met was sweet and kind.

Haha- made me laugh because the only Elaine I’ve ever known is also a total cow. She was a mean, horrible cow all the way through school and now spouts post after post about ‘being kind’ and ‘women supporting women’ on Facebook. Agree all the Karens I’ve ever known have been lovely, quiet, polite people who wouldn’t dream of speaking to the manager. and I am 100% sure there are lovely Elaines- just haven’t personally had the pleasure of meeting any.

Surnamey names, -den names, Callum, Connor, Liam, Darren, Dwayne, Dwight, Dean, Keith, Alan, Kevin, Graham, Nigel, Brian, Karen, Elaine, Diane, Lorraine, Linda, Emily, Lucy, Tracy, -een names, Destiny.

Pretentious names - really dislike Rupert. Also Hugo, Mabel etc.

Top ten names - many lovely but overused.

Normal names spelt weirdly.

Object/nature/animal names: Apple, Willow, River, Storm, Bear.

I know lots of lovely people with some of these names btw.

RestingMurderousFace · 03/01/2023 00:57

Freya. Irritatingly wafty and weak.

rafanadalsarms · 03/01/2023 00:59

Logan I absolutely loathe it and for a girl Amy and Naomi

Agree, it’s not always the case. Neither of my kids have had an Olivia in their classes, nor have come across one in extra curricular stuff. Must just mean there are 5 in another school.

Point still stands though. I find it strange that people choose super popular names knowing the risk.

"The risk" - sorry but that is so unnecessarily dramatic Grin

Id like to think my children have more going for them in regards to individuality (for example, personality traits, likes/dislikes, hobbies, beliefs) than just their name making them stand out.

I have a friend who changed her name legally to a bog standard (by MN opinion) name because her parents wanted something "unique" and she was bullied mercilessly throughout school because of it. She now happily shares a name with 2 others in her workplace and it has never caused an issue once!

Sometimes it's more the parents wanting to appear cool and unique and pretending it's for the child's benefit.

Rickandmortified100 · 03/01/2023 04:57

Albie bothers me a lot. (It bothers me even more now because my phone just tried to autocorrect it like 5 times as I was typing this.) It just sprang up out of nowhere and now is everywhere and it doesn’t even feel like a real name? Like an obscure twee nickname that suddenly is really popular for no reason. Annoys me.

Ottilie, pronounced ‘Otterly’, because it’s just the wrong pronunciation. Another name that suddenly went from 0 to everywhere and it doesn’t make sense because everyone is saying it annoyingly wrong.

Rickandmortified100 · 03/01/2023 04:59

Oh and Bodhi and Freya!

Rickandmortified100 · 03/01/2023 05:00

Amelia. Anything-May, worse Anything-Mae/Anything-Rae

AutumnCrow · 03/01/2023 05:19

It’s not the names so much but the posts about them on here that make me smile / grimace.

’Ophelia Rose is just exquisite, OP.’

’Dorcas Grace? Oh that’s an absolutely stunning name.’

‘I just adore the name Jenna-Rae.’

It’s all a bit daft really.

SlipperSchlepper · 03/01/2023 05:20

Archie and Alfie. They're so chavvy

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 03/01/2023 05:56

Ollie
Caleb
Esme
Lexi

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 03/01/2023 06:53

Lachlan sounds like clearing phlegm unfortunately.

RambamThankyouMam · 03/01/2023 06:55

Violet = violent/violate

Celeste = incest

Margot = maggot

Juniper = sounds like an antisemitic slur, Jew nipper

@Wombat100

what was the purpose of starting this thread, it's only going to hurt people who have children with these names?

it's not going to narrow down naming options fir anyone.

it just seems unkind.

This!

Beachloveramy · 03/01/2023 07:22

DramaAlpaca · 02/01/2023 01:58

OK, I hate these type of threads normally and usually just report them I hate lots of names but try to be diplomatic...but I'm full of cold and feeling grumpy so I'll admit that the ones I absolutely detest are...

Noah - it's just so whiney

Alfie & Archie - horrid, both of 'em

Poppy - it's a noise, not a name

Heidi - so twee it makes my teeth itch

I agree with you on those names!

I'd also add Oscar in to the mix - most pretentious name.

SchnauzerEyebrows · 03/01/2023 07:22

I know everyone has a different opinion but to use words like ‘hate’ with regards to baby names is harsh especially as some children and parents don’t always have a say in their names (Local Authority adoption requires adopted parents to keep the name originally choosen by birth parents) many of which I know, are listed on this thread! This is to keep part of their identity and family history, new middle names can be added but this could raise anxiety for adopted / foster parents and how the world perceives a child based purely on their name!

THIS!

loislovesstewie · 03/01/2023 07:23

And Billie/Billy , whether for boy or girl just horrid.
