Just out of interest really - is there a specific boy or girl name you just can’t stand?

Harvey and Olive.

Harvey was a recalcitrant cob who I could not ride one side of when having riding lessons many moons ago, and who once bit me.

Olive is a perpetually-miserable old woman who told the paper shop I delivered papers for that she never received hers, an injustice which 13-year-old me found breathtakingly unfair especially as I had to run the gamut of her badly-behaved yappy dogs to post it through her letterbox.

Both names ruined for me forever.

Anything that makes me think of a stripper or sex worker; Jade, Tallulah, Destiny, Scarlett

Boys it has to be Jayden, Kayden, Brayden etc

Who decides what the 'correct' spelling is?

Oh come on. It’s usually a universally recognised name deliberately spelled incorrectly to make them sound yoonique and speshulll.
I’ve seen Rubee, Daysee, Mykel… pretty clear those aren’t the correct spellings.

crossstitchingnana · 02/01/2023 10:13

My dds names, along with my own, have been listed. It makes me irrationally angry! 🤣

Can't stand Arlo, sounds like a dog name.

And for girls; Alisha, Ayesha, Lyla, Lola, Lilly, Molly etc.

A dictionary of names would be a good place to start.

Seth

Number4224 · 02/01/2023 10:19

Thankfully these have fallen out of fashion now but anything ending in the ‘web’ sound. So, Maureen, Doreen, Eileen, Pauline, Irene. They just sound so dreary.

Number4224 · 02/01/2023 10:20

That should say ‘een’ sound, damn autocorrect

Aftersevens · 02/01/2023 10:25

I can’t believe my name has not popped up yet as I really hate it 🤣
I seem to dislike all the names that were popular a generation before I was born, like Susan, Ann, Nigel, Colin etc they sound so boring.

For the pp who asked, Persephone is pronounced Per-seph-o-nee

Carouselfish · 02/01/2023 10:26

Oh yes, Esme! Sounds like a sneeze, looks like an orgasm.

I don't like Grace at all, I think it looks and sounds the opposite to its meaning. Gr is very unappealing aesthetically and the one syllable is like a dog bark.

Purplemagnolias · 02/01/2023 10:34

Would be better if people could do one name they irrationally dislike rather than listing many many names and giving their opinion on them all... "It's overused"

I find the reasons most interesting!

Being 'overused' is definitely off putting to many. It means that a name has become so common and fashionable that it feels overused and will likely sound dated as it inevitably falls out of fashion

shouldbesleepingnotscrolling · 02/01/2023 10:35

Rory, Conrad, Atticus, Cordelia, Martha.

Don’t know why but if I hear babies/children with these names it makes me cringe inside!

WimbyAce · 02/01/2023 10:44

Always hated Hugo. The perfect name for a pretentious arse.

FOTTFSOFTFOASM · 02/01/2023 10:48

Surnames-as-first-names

dcut · 02/01/2023 10:50

Erica and Ingrid

DuncanBiscuits · 02/01/2023 10:50

Duncan and Brendan make me feel a bit sick. Always have, I don’t know why.

DuncanBiscuits · 02/01/2023 10:51

I’ve just realised Duncan is in my username. Still hate it though.

Squirrelsnut · 02/01/2023 10:51

Deirdre pronounced Deer-dree as in Barlow. May as well be Dreary. I believe it's meant to be said Deer-druh.

In my head I go through versions of ‘Hugo fuck yourself/Hugo this way’.

I don’t understand the popularity.

TheaBrandt · 02/01/2023 10:52

Wouldn’t you look into it though? I was going to call dd1 Olivia until I realised so was everyone else so picked a different better name.

I have teens and no joke their mates all have the same few names (eve/Grace/Lily/Isabel etc). Plenty of great normal names that aren’t done to death. Don’t think that makes me snobby 😁though seems I have touched a nerve! My own name is overused (3 in my friendship group) so I wanted to swerve that for my own kids.

Nothing I read on MN today will top this post 😂😂😂

I know everyone has a different opinion but to use words like ‘hate’ with regards to baby names is harsh especially as some children and parents don’t always have a say in their names (Local Authority adoption requires adopted parents to keep the name originally choosen by birth parents) many of which I know, are listed on this thread! This is to keep part of their identity and family history, new middle names can be added but this could raise anxiety for adopted / foster parents and how the world perceives a child based purely on their name!
