Emmett- to similar ?

Really loving this name for a boy but our surname is Mitchell and I’m aware Emmett can be pronounced both Em-muht and Em-mit and now I’m worrying that it runs into our surname too much. Am I overthinking? There would be a middle name too (that we haven’t decided yet) so there is something to break it up but obviously middle names aren’t always used

Yes it does
To me it says Mit Mit in the middle.
Em MIT MIT chul

Hagster · 30/12/2022 18:22

I don't think it is too similar or runs into it too much at all. I say go for it.

That’s my worry, but then I’m not sure if that matters too much?

It's a no from Cornwall

cheapskatemum · 30/12/2022 18:32

I think if you always pronounce it EmmEtt, it will be fine.

Because it’s another word for a tourist?. We’re very far away from Cornwall so I’m not too bothered about it

Sorry it’s a no from Devon. In Cornwall Emmet, is used a derogatory term to describe incomers or tourists. In Devon the same term is grockle.

PritiPatelsMaker · 30/12/2022 18:34

I think they run into one another too much.

I’m not asking for opinions on the name, as I said previously we’re very far away from Cornwall and it won’t be a problem. I’m just wondering if the names run into each other and if that’s a big deal

The middle sounds are similar.

Emmett is the name associated with a particularly violent lynching of a 14 year old boy.
His mother kept his coffin open so that people would see what had been done to him for supposedly whistling at a white woman.
It was a major catalyst in the civil rights movement.

It is a very well known story in the USA and would seriously put me off using the name.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 30/12/2022 18:42

I've just said it aloud a couple of times, and it's fine.

I am aware of this story. Personally it doesn’t put me off the name, but I can understand why it would put others off.

As long as you know about the association and are okay then I wouldn't worry about the sounds being similar.
People pause between one name and another.

bravotango · 30/12/2022 18:59

I think it's too similar to the surname. What about Ellis?

That’s what I think but I keep second guessing myself

Not a fan really, unfortunately

Personally I would pronounce it Em-met as it’s written never heard it said as an it or uht ending. I think it sounds lovely with your surname.

WetBandits · 30/12/2022 19:02

Mmmm I don’t know, it does make a bit of a Roadrunner ‘meep meep’ sound 😳

How about Emerson?

I’m not sure if I’m explaining how I pronounce it right, it’s like it’s written but with a short E at the end and not much emphasis on it

Not great sounding tbh.

Roselilly36 · 30/12/2022 19:08

Always make me think of Keeping up Appearances, Lady of the house speaking! So it’s a no from me.

vintagemom · 30/12/2022 19:09

Sorry, I’d just like to clarify again that I’m not asking for opinions on the actual name, just whether it works with our surname or not

It sounds great! Don't worry about 2 x "mi" sounds, they're spelt differently and it's a memorable name - ignore negative comments and go for it

Exactfare · 30/12/2022 19:16

It's a great name and your I think it's fine with your surname
