Emmett- to similar ?

Really loving this name for a boy but our surname is Mitchell and I’m aware Emmett can be pronounced both Em-muht and Em-mit and now I’m worrying that it runs into our surname too much. Am I overthinking? There would be a middle name too (that we haven’t decided yet) so there is something to break it up but obviously middle names aren’t always used

It sounds great! Don't worry about 2 x "mi" sounds, they're spelt differently and it's a memorable name - ignore negative comments and go for it

Thank you!. Logically I think it doesn’t matter, there is a middle name in between and they’ll hardly ever be called by both his first and last name.

It does make me say mitmit in the middle but I don't think it sounds terrible or anything.

yeah I suppose it isn’t like it makes a rude word or something

I like the name, I think it does run into the surname a bit, but I don't think it's too much of a problem. It's not a glottal stop or similar.

Butterbeer4All · 30/12/2022 19:30

It sounds fine with your last name

vintagemom · 30/12/2022 19:40

thank you everyone for your opinions. I’m only 20 weeks so still ages to decide but I’m going to be saying it loads tonight to see if it really bothers me

You didn't ask for alternatives, but if you are looking for any, I love Edmund and think it has a similar vibe to Emmett.

Elliott is alright and inoffensive, but it's a lot more commonplace and less elegant than Emmett (imo)

Thank you :).
Other names we have considered are Travis, Trevor and Cedric, to give you a sort of idea of the names we like. But Emmett is our favourite.

These names are hated on Mumsnet, but I considered them for DS and they have the -e/att but without the m...

Bennett
Wyatt

But Edmund is my favourite of my suggestions (and you must use it so I can live vicariously 😁)

I also love Cedric!

Wyatt is nice but too close to DSs name.
Not a fan of the others but thank you

I love it and I think it sounds class with your surname. Very pleasant to say.

Starryskiesinthesky · 30/12/2022 20:28

I think they do run into each other a bit but not so much that it means you can’t use it. Sounds good to me.

I don’t think you can say there will be a middle name and that you don’t often say your names together - I say mine all the time!

despite all that tho I say it’s a good name combo!

JoyPeaceSleep · 30/12/2022 20:29

I love the name but I don't think it flows well with Mitchell tbh

vintagemom · 30/12/2022 20:30

There’s such conflicting opinions😂 it’s so difficult isn’t it

I think it's absolutely fine because the emphasis is on the first syllable of both names so they don't run into each other. Also, in Ireland we pronounce Emmett as EMM-ett, not Eh-MITT, so it's not MIT-MIT, but ET-MIT. I quite like the name, and like it 1,000 times more than your other choices, op! 😉

Thank you! I much prefer it to our other choices too. The way we pronounce it means that it doesn’t run into our surname but then I worry about how others pronounce it

I'd use it 🤷‍♀️
I don't think it runs into each other at all .

UsingChangeofName · 30/12/2022 20:49

Thank you!. Logically I think it doesn’t matter, there is a middle name in between and they’ll hardly ever be called by both his first and last name.

I disagree with that, there are thousands upon thousands of times people say "Firstname Surname" but you only use the middle name at birth announcement, graduation, wedding, and (if Porridge is anything to go by) when being sentenced in court.
However I also think that you have a tiny pause for a fraction of a second when you are saying both names (generally reading off a list), so I don't hear the two names together being an issue from the pov you are worrying about.

I mean, I really am not at all keen on the name, nor any of your other choices, tbh, but I had my turn at naming my dc, and there isn't an issue for the reason you are thinking of with your surname and choice of firstname.

IET · 30/12/2022 20:58

Nobody pronounces it e-MITT like emission! It's definitely EMM-ett, with emphasis on the first syllable, surely in every English speaking accent.

So if that's your concern I think you're totally fine op! It's a good name. I think you should use it

He hates it but I love it,however my daughter is called Dorothy so I’m an old fashioned name lover x

Sorry it’s a no from Devon. In Cornwall Emmet, is used a derogatory term to describe incomers or tourists. In Devon the same term is grockle.

So tiresome. Their economy would be fucked without those pesky emmets/grockles.

Whichwhatnow · 30/12/2022 21:28

I love the name. It sounds fine with your last name. I would pronounce it with a kind of really short/dropped 'eh' or 'uh' sound for the second syllable if that makes any sense? With the emphasis on the first syllable. Like EHm't? Definitely not Emmitt.
