Thoughts on / alternatives to Olive?

Please help! This is the only name we can agree on but I'm not 100% sure.

Little sister to Jasmine.

We're not keen on names ending in -a but not 100% against.

Prefer familiar names that aren't super popular.

Slightly put off Olive because of the popularity of Oliver and Olivia (is that rational?)

Could you go with Olive and call her Ollie as a nickname? Olivia would go well with Jasmine but it is popular.

That's actually the plan re Ollie as nickname! Think it's really cute for a girl.

Beautiful 😍

sevenbyseven · 28/12/2022 08:23

I only know one Olive, aged 14, and she's lovely and the name really suits her. I don't associate it with Olivia somehow!

toppity · 28/12/2022 08:26

Probs not v helpful but I really dislike the name olive as it literally makes me picture an olive and therefore seems too ‘round’ and plump a name. But that is probs ridiculous and you have to trust your own tastes as there is no perfect name.

toppity · 28/12/2022 08:26

Hate myself for use of ‘probs’ there. Sorry.

This is also one of my reservations but I suspect once she's born the association will just be with her and her personality

Olive was one of the fastest rising names in England and Wales in 2021, so not super popular but could be getting there. Personally I’m not a fan but that could be swayed by the fact that an Olive I know truly detests her name and wishes she’d changed it at the earliest opportunity.

yoshiblue · 28/12/2022 08:38

I personally don't this Olive goes with Jasmine as a sibling. Jasmine is such a pretty name and Olive so dull. Makes me think of popeye - sorry!

I can understand your resistance to Olivia, it's extremely popular but is at least pretty.

What else is on your short list?

Oof.. yeah bit of a gamble using a marmite name.. would hate her to hate it.

Any ideas for names will a similar feel?

I love the name. It just sounds complete to me; I don’t like Olivia or Oliver because they draw out too long.

I think it’s one of those names that is so sweet as a baby, but you could also imagine on a fabulous woman too.

It was on my list but vetoed by dh.

yoshiblue · 28/12/2022 08:44

I would be looking at alternative flowery names eg

Lily
Violet
Iris
Poppy

villamariavintrapp · 28/12/2022 08:45

I love Olive, but not Olivia. And Jasmine. April? For a similar sort of feel? Ivy?

ThatshallotBaby · 28/12/2022 08:46

Myrtle

Pearl

Jonquil

Briony

Briar

Sux2buthen · 28/12/2022 08:57

Makes me think of on the buses but I wasn't even born then.
It's a perfectly nice name though.
Ottillie? No idea of the 'right' spelling but Ollie for short would still work

pilates · 28/12/2022 09:00

Rosa
Ezme
Pearl

Neversaygoodbye · 28/12/2022 09:14

Ottie, I think it goes well with Jasmine.

Whatwhatwhatnow · 28/12/2022 09:30

Olesya / Olessia? Too Slavonic?

There are loads of baby Olives around here. Tbh I'd rather use Olivia.

AChristmasCaro · 28/12/2022 09:33

I’m afraid I also think of On The Buses and hence find it a complete non-starter. I’m 43 so too young for the show but the name stuck.

Much prefer Olivia despite how common it is and think it goes better with Jasmine.

Reclining · 28/12/2022 09:42

I love Ottillie but dp has vetoed.. might try again.

Maybe the cause for the name's rise in popularity is On the Buses slowly leaving public memory..

Sorry, I am of a certain age and just can't get past the memory of Olive Oil and Pop Eye the sailor man.

greenteafiend · 28/12/2022 09:46

I really detest this name, sorry - it sounds round and fat and frumpy. I think Olive, sister to Jasmine, would really feel like she got the less-pretty name.

How about Fern, Laurel or Hazel, to continue the nature/plants theme, and to avoid a name ending in -a?

Bugbuggerit · 28/12/2022 09:52

Granddaughter called Olive ,
we all absolutely love Olive .

countrypunk · 28/12/2022 09:53

I love the name Olive, OP. I don't like Olivia at all. I think it sounds a bit prissy and stuck up. But then I don't like typically 'pretty' girls' names.

I also love Willa, Jessica, Orla, Frances (nn Frankie), Ada, Nyla, Nell, Mabel.

Hope that gives you some inspiration Smile

And congratulations!

CheerfulYank · 28/12/2022 09:55

I think Olive is very sweet (it’s the name of my cat actually 🤣) but it is really popular in certain circles and I feel like it might be a bit dated later on. But what name won’t really? If you love it, use it.
