Thoughts on / alternatives to Olive?

Please help! This is the only name we can agree on but I'm not 100% sure.

Little sister to Jasmine.

We're not keen on names ending in -a but not 100% against.

Prefer familiar names that aren't super popular.

Slightly put off Olive because of the popularity of Oliver and Olivia (is that rational?)

Speaking as an Irish poster, Colette comes across as very old fashioned and every bit as dumpy as Olive. The Colettes I knew as a child were all born in the 1940s. They were mothers of kids I grew up with. I associate the name with women wearing head to toe crimplene in 70s-tastic shades.

This is interesting as to (English) me it's v sexy and French. Funny how different names seem in different countries.

KirstenBlest · 29/12/2022 18:08

Speaking as a Welsh-speaking poster:
Olwen
Carys
Gwyneth
are names of women aged well over 50, and they seem strange suggestions for Jasmine's little sister.

Catrin and Ffion aren't as middle-aged but still seem strange if there is no welsh connection.

Orla

Reclining · 29/12/2022 18:32

Orla is a great shout but DP works with one so it's a no.

We've realised that we do actually like -a endings. Leila is now the frontrunner!

The thing that swayed us away from Olive was it just not sitting right with Jasmine. Don't want to worsen the sibling rivalry in any way.

I agree it’s not right with Jasmine. Luna?

RambamThankyouMam · 29/12/2022 19:28

Olive is a dreadful name!

Or Lila? I think less common than Leila but both nice

I am team Olive is awful, and it is a name that really does not travel well.

Caspianberg · 29/12/2022 19:41

Marina
Alberta ( Bertie is very cute)
Harriet
Lilian
Opal ( could use Ollie still)
Ottoline ( could use Ollie )

This is a good point - DD has a similarly marmite, non-frilly name but one of the things we liked about it was that travelled well and was familiar across Europe and the English-speaking world.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 29/12/2022 20:58

I don't like the name Olive - it just reminds me of Olive from On The Buses who was very plain. She was the epitome of plainness!

Jasmine is such a pretty name it seems very unfair to give your second child such a plain name.

PPs have given lovely floral names to choose from. Laurel is lovely and goes really well with Jasmine. But if you don't want a floral name how about something like Selina (I know you said you didn't want a name ending in 'a'.but Jasmine and Selina sound pretty together.)

SmiffyL89 · 29/12/2022 22:11

Eliza 😊

JedEye · 29/12/2022 22:52

Yes Eliza is lovely.

FfayeN · 29/12/2022 23:15

Another vote for Ophelia 🥰🥰🥰

ODFOx · 29/12/2022 23:18

I like Olive. The only child association in my mind is the little girl from the movie Little Miss Sunshine who was awesome!

Other names I like with Jasmine include
Sophie (not Sophia)
Laura (Not Lauren)
Phoebe
Ruby
Heather
Coral
Celeste

SoShallINever · 29/12/2022 23:27

Sorry, I think its the worst name out there.
A small hard, bitter fruit. Or Popeye's wife.

Lucyjoyous · 30/12/2022 00:43

Other ideas to pair with jasmine

Juniper
Marina
Eliza
Corinne
Verity
Robyn
Georgia
Sabrina
Chloe
Daphne
Phillipa
Athena

FfayeN · 30/12/2022 10:04

Jasmine and Francesca? Frankie as a nn? Or Jessica? They're both very feminine and go with Jasmine.

Aurora and Jasmine sounds like you're rounding up the Disney princesses, which is fine if you like Disney 😊

KirstenBlest · 30/12/2022 10:17

I like the suggestion of Jasmine and Phoebe.
Laura/Sophie are good ones too

The obvious alternative to Olive is Olivia, but it has been very popular for a very long time

Jasmine and Jessica are both nice but are too similar

Penguinsaregreat · 30/12/2022 10:52

I dislike Olive. Reminds me of Olive on Popeye and from a programme called on the buses. The Olive in On the buses was a figure of ridicule and I can’t shake off the connection.

Nugget478 · 01/01/2023 13:07

I think Ollie is a nice name for a girl, a little different.

Libby?

user1492757084 · 01/01/2023 13:39

Jasmine and Ivy
Jasmine and Oleanda
Jasmine and Olivette
Jasmine and Dulcie
Jasmine and Daphne
Jasmine and Pomeline
Jasmine and Rose
Jasmine and Amber

Spidey66 · 02/01/2023 14:21

I don't like it, it reminds me of On The Buses. I do like Olivia, though obviously there are billions of Olivias around!
