Hi everyone, we have called our baby girl Emmeline Clara. Always loved the name Emmeline and was aware that some people could hear it as Emily potentially but have been shocked since naming her to find out most people haven’t heard the name before / don’t hear it properly / don’t know how to spell it in real life. I’m having name regrets, and am thinking of switching her name to Clara Emmeline as Clara is an easier name (we also like the name Clara but it was our second choice and it is very popular outside of the UK). Anyone has any experience with the name Emmeline day to day? I still love it and like that it’s not overused, but don’t know if she wants to deal with the challenge (?) throughout her life. We wouldn’t shorten Emmeline but of course nicknames can come over time. Thanks so much for any help.

Emmeline is a perfectly normal and not unusual name. How have people not heard of it? Stick with it.

Changingplace · 25/12/2022 08:51

I love the name Emmeline, it’s underused but not unheard of, stick with it.

FlowerArranger · 25/12/2022 08:51

Emmeline is such a lovely name!
Personally I would not change it.

RambamThankyouMam · 25/12/2022 08:52

Emmeline is a gorgeous name! Don't switch them. Clara sounds like a goose honking.

Penguinsaregreat · 25/12/2022 08:53

Beautiful name. Don’t change it.

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 25/12/2022 08:53

DH Grandma was an Emmeline and we know one who’s early teens. Not aware of anyone struggling with it, have they not heard of Emmeline Pankhurst?

NancyJoan · 25/12/2022 08:56

One of my favourite children in the world - not my own - is an Emmeline. It does get misheard, as Emily, but it’s easy to correct. It’s a lovely name.

Tangoes · 25/12/2022 08:58

I think it's a lovely name and agree with the PP who mentions Emmeline Pankhurst.Do people not know about the Suffragettes?
Emme would be a lovely nickname too.

goldenfoliage · 25/12/2022 10:12

Some people pronounce Clara as Clar-a some as Claire-a, which might also cause confusion.
Emmeline is wonderful name and you shouldn't so easily quit over it. But I understand some people might pronounce -line part different, so if you're no longer sure, change it.

Mammyloveswine · 25/12/2022 10:33

I think it's a beautiful name!

Katjolo · 25/12/2022 10:36

Emmeline Pankhurst comes to mind
Beautiful, strong name. Surprised by those who have not heard this name before.

Aphidsandhoneybees · 25/12/2022 10:54

Emmeline is a really lovely name!

MerryChristmasToYou · 25/12/2022 13:13

I only like Clara said as Claira, and even then I'm not keen.
Emmeline is a normal name, and surely people should have heard of Emmeline Pankhurst.

mitsy5 · 25/12/2022 13:16

It’s a beautiful name and my first choice for a girl if I was to have any more (I’m not lol).

mitsy5 · 25/12/2022 13:16

Posted too soon! Definitely don’t change it.

BuffaloCauliflower · 25/12/2022 13:17

Don’t change a name you like because other people don’t listen. Emmeline is uncommon but it’s a lovely and not silly name. People get names wrong for so many reasons, just correct them and go on

arethereanyleftatall · 25/12/2022 13:18

Most people?!? Really. That's quite weird I would think. It's a lovely name, and I would be very surprised if I met anyone who'd never heard of it!

Ihatethenewlook · 25/12/2022 13:21

I’ve never heard of it. It kind of sounds like a make up brand or something to me. It’s definitely not terrible though. If you like it then I wouldn’t change it

TheBirdintheCave · 25/12/2022 13:25

Nothing wrong with Emmeline. I instantly think of Ms Pankhurst.

AkoraEdelherb · 25/12/2022 13:25

I hadn’t heard of the name Emmeline until I saw it on a Mumsnet baby list, and I was living in London for many years. But I’m not British, didn’t study the suffragettes at school, and wasn’t working with babies (I know of no adult Emmelines).

Are you British OP? Emmeline is not a common ‘international’ name, but it really shouldn’t be a problem for people to get it right once they hear it / see it written down once or twice. Are people still misspelling or mispronouncing after several meetings? Because that’s on them, not the name.

Whatdayisitalexa · 25/12/2022 13:28

Beautiful names...you may need to correct some people when they 'hear' Emily..but it's not a deal-breaker in the slightest. More than likely the name will get shortened along the way...as they tend to. But a correction and the education is not a negative

MissHavershamReturns · 25/12/2022 13:34

Emmeline is a great name. Clara also lovely but there is a major “pronounceable” issue with Clara - Claire-ah versus Klar (rhymes with bar) - a

MissHavershamReturns · 25/12/2022 13:34

Stick with your choice. Beautiful name!!

DramaAlpaca · 25/12/2022 19:57

Oh, stick with it! Emmeline is gorgeous.

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/12/2022 20:09
