Elias - How do British pronounce it?

SantaClausss · 18/12/2022 21:59

It’s natural to me, as I read it, to pronounce it as Eee - lee - as.

Is it the way it is pronounced in the Uk?

Eh lie as

Rauha · 18/12/2022 22:01

Eh-LIE-as

Wigeon · 18/12/2022 22:02

I would say “El-ee-ass” - with a short “el” not “long “ee” at the start. My accent is “standard” British English, how people think newsreaders speak.

Meecrowavay · 18/12/2022 22:03

I'd pronounce it El-eye-us

Meecrowavay · 18/12/2022 22:04

Or maybe, more accurately, el-lie-us

Frazzled2207 · 18/12/2022 22:05

I know one and he is eh-LIE-as

AuntieStella · 18/12/2022 22:05

Ell-ee-ass

Some say Ell-eye-ass

frampan6 · 18/12/2022 22:06

E-lee-ass it's nice but doesn't work well in English

Theimpossiblegirl · 18/12/2022 22:12

El igh us
I think

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 18/12/2022 22:15

I think the "Eh -lye -as" pronunciation is pretty standard for the UK and other English speaking countries like the US etc (as most will base the pronunciation on similarly Biblical but more popular/well known Elijah which also has the "lye" sound). It's a shame as I personally much prefer the sound of the European "Eh- lee -as"

Pieceofpurplesky · 18/12/2022 22:18

I have taught two El-Lee-as 's

CharitySchmarity · 18/12/2022 22:47

Almost always e-LIE-as, but I've met one, from a Middle Eastern Muslim background, who was ELLIE-as.

AriettyHomily · 18/12/2022 22:49

As you do

RuthW · 18/12/2022 22:54

Eh - lie-ass

Purplemagnolias · 18/12/2022 23:05

Eh-LEE-as

UsingChangeofName · 18/12/2022 23:06

El (like at the start of elephant) - eye - us

Purplemagnolias · 18/12/2022 23:08

Like Eliot but ending in -as not -ot

solidaritea · 18/12/2022 23:20

Depends on how they pronounce

I've met
El - ee - ass (people pronouncing like this have all been Muslim)

But also
El - igh - ass (not sure of origin)

solidaritea · 18/12/2022 23:21

Oh and I've also met Ilyas - Ee - lee - ass

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 18/12/2022 23:22

I would pronounce same as OP

AmazonianAvatar · 18/12/2022 23:31

I have one and we pronounce E-lie-us.He’s almost 21 and the name was very rare in the UK when he was born. I see it in the boards a lot now.

I hate people pronouncing it E-li-ass with emphasis on the ‘ass’! We’re not Muslim. Just loved the name.

DacwMamYnDwad · 19/12/2022 11:52

El-EYE-us in most of the UK.
Welsh speakers say it as El-EE-as

AntiqueCestChic · 19/12/2022 12:03

I know 2 children with this name

One pronounces it Ell - eee- ass

The other is Ell - eye- ass

Abraxan · 19/12/2022 12:17

The children I have taught names this, it's been pronounced

e-l-ee-uh-s

FayCarew · 19/12/2022 12:30

What did you teach them, @Abraxan ? What were their backgrounds?
