Nox for a boy

My DH and I love Nox for a boy. Is it usable? Please be honest, I won’t be offended.

It means ‚night‘ and we got it from a book.

My concern is that people may spell it Knox or that it’s too unusual.

Sister is called Ruby.

Get ready for Nox Nox jokes.

pictish · 16/12/2022 09:28

Prefer it spelled Knox tbh.

TheOtherHotstepper · 16/12/2022 09:28

Knox just about. Otherwise, how about Nixon nn Nox?

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 16/12/2022 09:28

Think people will think Knox, tbh.

It's a Latin word rather than a name / proper noun, really.

Spelt Knox i like it. I dont like the look of Nox written down..but as they sound the same i guess its personal preference

flummingbird · 16/12/2022 09:29

Isn't it slang for nitrous oxide?? And yeah, I'd automatically spell with a k...

Justcallmebebes · 16/12/2022 09:29

Sorry but I immediately thought Pox so I wouldn't. Kids are ruthless when it comes to nicknames and taking the piss

Sherrystrull · 16/12/2022 09:30

I just think of the word 'noxious'

bravotango · 16/12/2022 09:30

I think of nitrous oxide too - Knox is fine. What about Fox?

Hopeyoursproutsarealreadyon · 16/12/2022 09:30

One letter mishap and he will be Sox /Box /Fox
I am all for unusual names but spelt the usual way!

pictish · 16/12/2022 09:31

I mean you can spell it Nox if you like but other people will assume Knox.

My dd has a name with various spellings and we accept (and encourage her to accept) that people will misspell it and that it really doesn't matter.

No that's pronounced Noss

GrimsbyOrangePippin · 16/12/2022 09:32

Nox. Short for Entonox? Noxious? Knockers? Looks like a misspelling of Knox. Plus what everyone else said. I don't condone making fun of people's names at all but the world is cruel.

Use it if you like it but I think it may cause quite a few problems for your child and at best they will be constantly explaining how to spell it, where it comes from, what it means. Which can be very wearing.

CambsAlways · 16/12/2022 09:33

Not a fan sorry, and I immediately thought of nox nox jokes,

Scautish · 16/12/2022 09:34

Could you use it as a middle name? First name could be Opportunity?

ReluctantLondoners · 16/12/2022 09:34

I would also go with Knox. Nox makes me think of noxious or the chemical symbol for nitrous oxide. Knox is quite cool and unusual. I can imagine hearing that at school and not thinking much about it.

Cinnamonandcoal · 16/12/2022 09:34

I think of noxious I'm afraid.

BloodAndFire · 16/12/2022 09:35

It sounds like a cleaning product (jif, flit, nox). Also why would you want to name your child after night? A bit depressing isn't it?

Merrow · 16/12/2022 09:35

They use it as a spell in Harry Potter, which was my first thought. I think if you like the sound I'd go for Knox.

AtrociousCircumstance · 16/12/2022 09:36

Noxious. So no.

SummaLuvin · 16/12/2022 09:36

nox nox jokes didn't even come into my mind. I did think of the Harry Potter spell, Knox, used to extinguish Lumos.

Not my cup of tea generally, but not horrible. I would use a fairly conventional middle name with it so your child has options if they do find it too unusual.

VerityUnreasonble · 16/12/2022 09:37

I would also have automatically thought of nitrous oxide

Itsthewhitehat · 16/12/2022 09:38

Nox is the Roman Goddess of night. The Greek Equivalent is Nyx, also female.

I would find it an odd choice for a boy. Knox is traditionally a male name.

Then there the Harry Potter connection. And the ones above.

Oh sorry, apparently it isn't the chemical symbol but shorthand used in atmospheric chemistry.
