Nox for a boy

My DH and I love Nox for a boy. Is it usable? Please be honest, I won’t be offended.

It means ‚night‘ and we got it from a book.

My concern is that people may spell it Knox or that it’s too unusual.

Sister is called Ruby.

I already apologised but I guess kindness and compassion or proper discussions aren’t really valued here.

Actually that hadn’t loaded when I started writing my response.

But you want a compassionate and proper discussion and use sentences like ‘So the Oxford Uni‘s dictionary is wrong?’

If you are going to write arsey and/or sarcastic responses, expect them back. And your links only back up my point.

Whats a wiki link got to do with it? it’s still a female goddess.

You name your child what you want. But you asked for opinions.

It was simply a genuine question, not meant to be anything else.

OP I was not belittling anyone. I was simply stating some facts and- after many other suggestions - trying to protect your future child from just perhaps some possible embarassment. Even in these times, to call a boy by the name of a female goddess is unusual and does look, for want of a better word, odd. That might be what you want, if so, go ahead. But if I were a boy child, I really think that once I came to a certain age I would be asking why you had given me a female name.

FWIWJulian/Gillian (they're the same word in medieval English variant spellings) is a later female form. Julian is a later male form. But this does not alter the fact that the original Roman/Latin male/female forms are Julia/Julius.

So far as I can find out, there is NO later medieval form for Nox, male or female. Nox remained female for millenia.

I am genuinely sorry if these facts do not please you. I won't write more, either. But the LAST thing I was trying to do was belittle anyone or upset you. I was honestly trying to help.

For centuries, kings and leaders have, in Europe, been called female middle names, to invoke religious protection. And in some Catholic countries it still happens. It's just a bit unusual for people outside those spheres, and thse using annciet "pagan" names. That's all.

NotMyDayJob · 16/12/2022 19:07

It's an emission

mathanxiety · 16/12/2022 19:22

If popularity is your concern, I think you'll be safe with Knox. As you noted, Nox and Knox are pronounced the same.

However, you seem to be very invested in Nox and in shooting down all the opinions of people who have pointed out its closeness to words like noxious. Nox meaning night and darkness has generated some English words with negative connotations.

Yes, Knox sounds the same, but that K is a hurdle a lot of kids wouldn't get across en route to taking the piss out of your child.

I just think of the word 'noxious'

Me too.

Namechange1345677 · 16/12/2022 19:30

I have a pet called nox. His nickname is noxious gas...so no not a good a
Name for a child

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 16/12/2022 21:23

I can understand wanting something a bit less popular this time if you have a Ruby but Nox is way too far in the opposite direction. They make no sense as a sibling pair, which don’t need to match but do generally tend to come
from the same universe!

You seem set on it however so I hope this thread has been useful in helping you practise your arguments.

JustCakeInDrag · 16/12/2022 21:25

“Please be honest, I won’t be offended.”

Lizzy1328 · 16/12/2022 21:30

It's a completely shit made up name.

There are some proper discussions on this thread. As for kindness and compassion - on this board, they're generally for the kid who may be given an unfortunate name.

BloodAndFire · 17/12/2022 14:27

Is it usable?

No.

Please be honest, I won’t be offended.

Yes, you will.

misslucy92 · 17/12/2022 14:30

Being honest is not the same as being mean, cruel, spiteful but I guess that’s lost on some people here.

Thanks to the people who gave constructive criticism and kind replies!

Noxious

Nitrogen Oxides

JustCakeInDrag · 17/12/2022 14:41

I am sorry that you have had a hard time on this thread, OP. May I gently suggest that it is a preview of what your son might encounter through a lifetime of being named Nox? It’s not his fault that you gave your daughter a popular name.

AnotherCountryMummy · 17/12/2022 14:53

My first thought was noxious. And then second was a cleaning product. Sorry.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 17/12/2022 15:08

I think of atmospheric chemistry too, sorry. Admittedly, that's written NOx, but pronounced the same.

I would tend to default to Nyx for the goddess of the night but I do know that Nox is the equivalent (like I'd use Persephone rather than Proserpina).

EducatingArti · 17/12/2022 15:13

It really makes me think of "noxious" so I don't think it is suitable and could set a child up for some serious bullying around the "you stink" theme.
So no I don't think you should use it at all.

winonarose · 23/12/2022 22:04

I personally dislike the name Nox and don't see it as an appealing name off the bat regardless of the meaning. Not a fan at all of names with 'no' in them

RambamThankyouMam · 24/12/2022 09:24

Why not Erebus?

Why not indeed?

PeachyMama · 24/12/2022 09:27

Reminds me of Harry Potter - I think nox is the name of the spell to turn out the lights
