Nox for a boy

My DH and I love Nox for a boy. Is it usable? Please be honest, I won’t be offended.

It means ‚night‘ and we got it from a book.

My concern is that people may spell it Knox or that it’s too unusual.

Sister is called Ruby.

It’s bloody awful. It rhymes with “pox” and it really really means very little in UK parlance.

It sounds like a cleaning product (jif, flit, nox). Also why would you want to name your child after night? A bit depressing isn't it?

I personally don’t find it depressing. I like the night, the moon, the stars.

Nox as in noxious!

SleepingStandingUp · 16/12/2022 09:51

Sorry OP I think it's awful and I just think noxious.

If you want moon, night ideas what about

Ciaran. This is an Irish Gaelic name. It means “dark,” which can be night-related or it can refer to a dark-haired person.
Darcel. This is a French-origin name meaning “dark”.
Izar. This is a Basque-origin name, meaning “star”.
Luan. This is a Portuguese name. It means “moon”.
Orion. This is a Greek name that used to mean “dweller on the mountain.” However, it’s usually associated with the constellation Orion.
Orpheus. This is an Ancient Greek name. It means “the darkness of night”.
Tynan. This is an Irish name. In Gaelic, it means “dark”.”.

Lark. This is an American name, meaning ‘bird that sings at night’.

I personally don’t find it depressing. I like the night, the moon, the stars.

I mean so do I, but it's kind of a dark thing to impose on someone for their whole life.

It also made me think of Nux Vomica.

SecretVictoria · 16/12/2022 09:55

It’s the Roman goddess, so a female name. Also made me think of Noxzema cream.

MarmiteCoriander · 16/12/2022 09:57

I too immediately thought of Pox or some other disease!

Knox I can see as a name, but not Nox.

PandaG · 16/12/2022 09:57

Definitely used as slang term for nitrous oxide round here, so would be the equivalent of naming child after a drug. Personally I wouldn't choose it.

PinkHeadphones · 16/12/2022 09:59

Lark. This is an American name, meaning ‘bird that sings at night’.

Surely larks are associated with morning, not night! "It was the lark, the herald of the morn/ No nightingale."

Notanotherone6 · 16/12/2022 10:02

Nitrous oxide, followed by noxious, followed by not knowing how to spell Knox.

Awful.

Podgedodge · 16/12/2022 10:02

What @SleepingStandingUp suggested.
Some lovely possibilities there fitting with theme.

YukoandHiro · 16/12/2022 10:04

Nitrogen Oxide.

don't do that to a child

YukoandHiro · 16/12/2022 10:05

Nitrous oxide I mean

pictish · 16/12/2022 10:07

Cosmo
Orion
Aster
Ehann
Nima

All star/moon masculine names.

Itsthewhitehat · 16/12/2022 10:08

Why not Erebus?

If you want to name your male child after a God and a connection to the night, Erebus would be better fit than a Goddesses name.

Oakbeam · 16/12/2022 10:08

Isn't it slang for nitrous oxide??

No, it’s shorthand for nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide, the nitrogen oxides that are most relevant for air pollution.

He might have problems if the ULEZ is extended further.

Namechangeforthis88 · 16/12/2022 10:09

Lark. This is an American name, meaning ‘bird that sings at night’.

So Lark, meaning lark then? Widely and strongly associated with early mornings ("up with the lark").

Next up:

Pigeon. A British name, meaning "bird related to dove".

toastofthetown · 16/12/2022 10:12

I also thought of Harry Potter. If you say ‘hey Siri, Nox’ she’ll switch your torch off for you (and switch it on for Lumos). I prefer the Knox spelling.

toomuchlaundry · 16/12/2022 10:12

Why would you name a boy after a goddess?

AutisticLegoLover · 16/12/2022 10:13

Fort Knox.
Noxious
Harry Potter spell for turning off the light.

Shecrazy · 16/12/2022 10:15

I would think you were a Dead Poet's Society fan!

Knox Overstreet is a brilliant character in my favourite ever film, love it!

Thanks for the reminder OP, may have to watch that again this weekend 😍

25anxi · 16/12/2022 10:16

that’s the word we say to turn off all the smart lights at night 😅

GeneratedRandomly · 16/12/2022 10:16

It sounds like a character from a game or a toy.

WeDontNeedToTalkAboutJamie · 16/12/2022 10:18

It made me think of the Harry Potter spell. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing!

WhatAmIDoingWrong123 · 16/12/2022 10:19

I’d think the parents were pretentious if I met a kid called Nox.
