Nox for a boy

My DH and I love Nox for a boy. Is it usable? Please be honest, I won’t be offended.

It means ‚night‘ and we got it from a book.

My concern is that people may spell it Knox or that it’s too unusual.

Sister is called Ruby.

I was referring to this which I believe is quite widely known (especially amongst young people who like to dabble with drugs!)

But it says nos, not nox. That doesn’t sound nearly the same to me.

Isn't it slang for nitrous oxide?? And yeah, I'd automatically spell with a k...

This is what I first thought of too. Not really nice for a name.

Yeah I know. I was responding to someone who said nitrous oxide was referred to as nox. I just said I'd only heard it referred to as nos. I like the name Knox. I'm on your team 😜

First thought was Harry Potter. Nox and Lumos.

Growlybear83 · 16/12/2022 14:11

I think it would be really cruel to give a child a name like that. They will get teased constantly at school, and will be really embarrassed when they are older and trying to be taken seriously at work.

FangedFrisbee · 16/12/2022 14:11

Nox is a spell from Harry Potter. Means to put a light out. I wouldn't.

NOx is shorthand for oxides of nitrogen, horribly polluting gases. As a scientist that’s the only thing I think of when I see that!

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 16/12/2022 14:22

Knox is a bit out there but ok. Nox isn't. It looks like it's short for noxious.

I read Harry Potter several times but somehow didn‘t remember it. So it doesn‘t really bother me but thanks for pointing it out!

I do remember lumos very well, though.

Knox (apologies to Knoxes everywhere) seems to be a Lowland Scots surname. Famous Know was John Knox, an incendiary preacher who was, to say the least. a misogynist.

RambamThankyouMam · 16/12/2022 15:13

Absolutely nox. I mean, not.

Choconut · 16/12/2022 15:18

I'd go for something more normal like Noah on the bc and then have the nn Nox.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 16/12/2022 15:25

Nutty Noxie
Poxy Noxie

Don't do it, OP.

carbuncleonapigsposterior · 16/12/2022 15:28

Pretty awful, what's wrong with Knox, not great either slightly better at least looks like a proper name unlike nox which someone already been pointed out rhymes with pox, and well kids get to a certain age they can be cruel. At best it just sounds like a shortened version of noxious.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 16/12/2022 15:29

Very Harry Potter.

My car is nox and he is grey

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 16/12/2022 15:29

Cat not cat

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 16/12/2022 15:29

Agghhhhh

Marcipex · 16/12/2022 15:29

I wouldn’t because I immediately thought of the rhyme. Pox.
Kids are awful, especially from secondary age.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 16/12/2022 15:30

Cats nickname is naughty noxy btw.

Marcipex · 16/12/2022 15:33

What about Esra/Ezra? Or Blake?

Christmasnero · 16/12/2022 15:33

Would assume you were a Harry Potter fan

tillytoodles1 · 16/12/2022 15:34

Scautish · 16/12/2022 09:34

Could you use it as a middle name? First name could be Opportunity?

😂

Pterrydactyl · 16/12/2022 15:39

My first thought was nitrous oxides - in chemistry NOx is shorthand for Nitric Oxide and Nitrogen Dioxide, the Nitrogen oxides that contribute to air pollution.

scottishnames · 16/12/2022 15:40

As others have said:

  1. Name of a goddess (night) , in the same way that 'Aurora' is the name of the goddess of the dawn, Venus is the goddess of love, Iris is the goddess of the rainbow etc etc.. Only use it for a boy if you'd also be happy to call a boy Aurora or Venus or Iris etc .
  2. All round the world, in many different mythologies, night has been seen as female. So Nox really is an odd name to choose for a boy. (In contrast, the sun, and the sun-god, have usually been seen as male, hence names like Apollo and Inti etc etc...)
  3. Grammatically, it's a feminine noun, not a masculine one.
  4. Dangerous drug slang (whether chemically accurate or not)
  5. JKR is very inventive etc etc but Harry Potter names are a rag-bag taken from many different cultures. It's not always a good idea to use them out of context.
  6. Knox is at least a human surname and there is a long tradition in parts of Scotland of using mother's surnames as first names for second or third sons. But as a previous poster pointed out, John Knox - certainly, in Scotland, the best-known person with the name - was an extremely argumentative and intransigent character. In his own opinion he was steadfast, but to many today he appears bigoted and misogynistic.
