Could I please have your thoughts on these names for a girl?

We’re not having a middle name and the last name will be double barrelled (west African and British last names, both short).

  • Izuka
  • Medua
  • Vida
  • Zikora
  • Ibari
  • Murphy
  • Isa

I like Vida. I don't like Murphy, I'm Irish so I can only hear it as a surname

Adultchildofelderlyparents · 15/12/2022 21:22

Ibari stands out to me, I would choose that one, it sounds beautiful. I'm not keen on Murphy as a first name because I know quite a few people with Murphy as a surname. Otherwise no strong feeling for/against the rest of the list.

LulooLemon · 15/12/2022 22:22

• Izuka - nice
• Medua - not really
• Vida - yes
• Zikora - yes
• Ibari - my favourite!
• Murphy - not nice
• Isa - no, because it's a savings account

Ipanema01 · 16/12/2022 06:32

Love Vida

MrsSchadenfreude · 16/12/2022 06:53

Izuka and Ibari are lovely. I think there are lots of pretty Igbo names. I like Nneka, Nnenne, Ngozi. Friends called their daughters Adaoma and Ashirima which are also pretty.

romdowa · 16/12/2022 07:30

Murphy is an Irish surname ... not British . Please don't call your daughter Murphy ffs

My husband is Northern Irish, so British (and considers himself British), and Murphy is a family name on his side. ‘Ffs’, indeed.

Ashirima is lovely, but are you sure you’re spelling it correctly? Igbo names are generally words or sentences and that doesn’t mean anything.

The rest are perfectly nice, standard Igbo names. One of them is the most common Igbo girl’s name and another is my middle name. 😁

Yes, Murphy is an Irish name. But a last name, not a girl's first name....

Whichwhatnow · 16/12/2022 12:03

• Izuka - lovely
• Medua - objectively it's really pretty, but written down it just reminds me too much of Medusa and/or Medea
• Vida - lovely. Strong but feminine.
• Zikora - not overly keen for some reason
• Ibari - beautiful, really lovely sound. This is my favourite.
• Murphy - maybe for a middle name? Not as a girl's first name!
• Isa - My second favourite I think, now that you've explained the pronunciation

Thank you for your opinion, both times.

All these ‘it’s a last name, not a first name’ or ‘it’s a boy’s name, not a girl’s name’ people are amusing me. You must be finding the 21st century very stressful. 🤣🤣🤣

itssquidstella · 16/12/2022 12:11

I love Vida, Izuka and Isa.

What about Chioma?

CurlewKate · 16/12/2022 12:14

Perfectly happy in the 21st century. Just not wanting to do things that might make our children's lives any more difficult than necessary. Also pretty sure that nobody would endorse a suggestion to call a boy Chloe or Alice. It never works that way round.

Purpleavocado · 16/12/2022 12:14

Zikora makes me think of the biblical name Zipporah.
I really like Vida, sounds strong but feminine.

It honestly never occurred to me that people might pronounce ‘Isa’ like the financial product, so this thread has been so helpful for that! 😊

You’ve made your views perfectly clear, multiple times now. And you haven’t had a single pleasant thing to say. It’s a baby baby thread, not AIBU. Please stop.

Chioma is a great suggestion (it’s fab how clued up on Igbo names lots of you are!), but it’s not one of my faves, no.

I’m pretty sure I know which one we’re going for, but this thread has been a helpful steer.

@Cherchezlaspice I was at university with a really cool Chioma!

I also know a girl of Nigerian heritage called Shayemi but I don't know which language that name comes from. I think it's beautiful, though.

Cherchezlaspice · 16/12/2022 12:55

@itssquidstella Igbo girls are always cool. 😎

Shayemi is probably Yoruba, as ‘Yemi’ is a common suffix in Yoruba names. So, Adayemi, Oluyemi, etc. I’ve never come across Shayemi before, though. And I don’t speak Yoruba, so can’t say what it means. It’s a very pretty name.

Izuka - ok
Medua - reminds me of Medusa
Vida - fave of the lot
Zikora - reminds me of Zika virus
Ibari - I read online that this means ‘3rd daughter’ not sure if that’s accurate but if so, is she your 3rd?
Murphy - boy’s name
Isa - type of bank isa (everyone will pronounce it as eye-suh)

icegoose · 16/12/2022 13:18

I would pronounce Isa like the savings.

Izuka and Vida are both nice.

Murphy is an excellent middle name but I wouldn't use it as a first name.

NoLongerPembroke · 18/12/2022 15:32

I love all of them! Including Murphy (and I'm Irish, as apparently we get to say what's appropriate). A girl named 'Murphy' sounds like she's super cool, learnt how to code at the age of about six , plays instruments and is much much hipper than I will ever be. 😂

Izuka and Ibari are especially beautiful, though.

An Irish vote for Murphy? I’m astonished! 😂
