Having a hard time choosing. I like Autumn and DH likes Rose. But not keen on either as it sounds like a description rather than a name. Open to any and all suggestions

OP posts:

No one in real life is going to tell you they hate the name. Of course they’re going to say they love it. On mn you’ll be told what people actually think.

MadameMackenzie · 02/12/2022 10:02

@Butchyrestingface To be fair I had no idea either and I’m not exactly old! I don’t follow all the chavvy worshipping of people with gigantic lips & bums who are famous for no good reason. I couldn’t pick them apart I don’t think?

Mrsrasputian · 02/12/2022 10:03

I heard a captain once. Calling a child that is just child abuse!

Presumably you weren't considering calling your child 'StormI' with an I though?

The fact that OP was, and that particular spelling, strongly suggests she was well aware.

I'd have assumed the kid was going through a phase where he insists he's a pirate

Came for the comments and was not disappointed @Tinseltosser I love your comment.

It is very true that people do not really say how how they feel in real life it is why the internet is such a toxic mess overall because that’s how they actually feel.

Unless your SS asked what you thought then I would have fallen out with you too. Why do people these days think that their opinion counts when it's not even asked for..

SS asked our opinion as he was concerned that his wife was so set on it. We told him there was several issues with it, including that it was the name of a brand of sanitary towels in a large part of the rest of the world. SS didn't want the name but is totally under the thumb. SD heard from him we cautioned against it (but not the several reasons or that her husband also didn't like it) and we have ended up the villain of the piece. I personally don't give a shit. DH was upset as he was being honest to his son. It never occurred to him that his son would throw him/us under the bus. It's not as straightforward as you would assume.

JinglingXmasbells · 02/12/2022 10:06

I know more about teachers than you do. And I'm not a nun, and you are not a teacher.

@Alondra Oh no you don't.

Wrong

(well, it is panto time.)

diamondsarefornextweek · 02/12/2022 07:23

Jesus Christ, do not do this to your child. Give them a normal name, one you didn't find through either the Kardashians or porn.

That had me 🤣🤣🤣🤣

gonutkin · 02/12/2022 10:06

@B1993

"You’d be hard pressed to find a staff room in any part of the country (or, in fact, the world) that doesn’t discuss children’s names like this and, in fact, the parents of the children we teach. 🤷🏻‍♀️ And it’s not about slagging off the child as an individual, but just wondering why a parent wouldn’t think of the consequences for the poor child as they grow older!"

Just out of curiosity, what consequences would a name have on a persons life? My partner has an unusual name, it originates from his motherland or however it's said but basically it's quite unusual and needs spelling out often. He's had no issues with jobs etc if anything he has done incredibly well in my eyes. And im just wondering whether the discrimination of names would actually cause any problems for people as I've never seen it go further than a few judgemental people sniggering at other peoples expense

People judge everything, all the time, they might not say it to your face but they will hold opinions - but you know this.

Of course people our age will think Stormy Daniels - that's just the way it is. She was infamous for a few years around the world and unfortunately I can't think of any other 'Stormi/y's' to balance out that association.

I know a few 'Storm's' - which is only a letter shorter but feels very different.

There are lots of lovely suggestions on here. Go with the one that resonates.

You know that choosing a first name like that will have an impact on your child - hopefully a positive one - but you won't know that until she's older.

I used to be a teacher. We definitely eye rolled at the really stupid names - but judgement was directed at the parents, not the kids. The kids we just felt sorry for. Especially a year 7 girl called Tequila (who had already changed her name to Tallulah unofficially).

Nothing compared to my current job though (not teaching) where people's names are fully taken the piss out of. I guarantee all the blokes in my office would be making porn star jokes if they came across a Stormi. Probably to her face, given the chance.

JinglingXmasbells · 02/12/2022 10:10

Just out of curiosity, what consequences would a name have on a persons life?

Names give impressions, just like clothes and hairstyles.

They are the first thing seen on a CV by an employer.

Obviously, they are chosen by the parent.

And of course any adult can change their names. So if someone is saddled with an eyebrow raising name, they can change it.

FloresApparuerunt · 02/12/2022 10:11

People to your face: How unusual!

People behind your back: 😬

If you're going to insist on perpetrating this, though, at least choose a non-shit middle name.

Stormi Cleo
Stormi Adeline
Stormi Elise
Stormi Victoria (although there are a lot of places called Victoria... hazard of using an adjective as a first name)
Stormi Maya
Stormi Therese
Stormi Harper
Stormi Faye
Stormi Lucia
Stormi Regina

Yes, all of those things are discussed, too, but a teacher is a person as well. It’s easy to forget that when you’re not part of that community but it does mean we have opinions about things. 🤷🏻‍♀️

All of you innocent people that have never spoke about another person’s name or outfit or behaviour to a colleague can climb onto your pedestal, but I doubt that includes you, the ‘nun’. Which, by the way, you’ve written a very targeted attack on me both personally and professionally (which, since you have no actual evidence off is just unfounded) so I wouldn’t call you impervious to judgement and opinion either. Does that make you terrible at your job, life choices and just an all round terrible person, I guess it takes one to know one?

As I said previously, it’s not a criticism on the child, but if a parent names their child something ‘unique’ just for the sake of it, they are tied to that for the rest of their life. Dealing with people asking how to spell it, correcting spellings and pronunciations and dealing with the judgments of the name itself. So yes, it IS a life sentence.

Do you know what most teachers talk in the staff room? Schedules. Do you know what the rest of the time is spent on? Having a cuppa and disconnecting.

It's extraordinarily rare for teachers to talk about their students in their break unless there is a special case and a teacher wants advice from their colleagues.

A name is not a special case. And your posts keep getting more weird with statements like All of you innocent people that have never spoke about another person’s name or outfit or behaviour to a colleague can climb onto your pedestal.

Whatever floats your boat. I won't be answering to you again.

Butchyrestingface · 02/12/2022 10:11

No wonder most are single or their husbands are cheating on them, and have to come on here to be nasty. borrrriiinngggg. They wouldn't say shit to peoples faces they hide behind a screen.

Your husband must be working his way through the entire town then using this logic.

Elspethelf · 02/12/2022 10:11

Ah ignore the nasty comments.

I prefer one syllable names with Stormi. Stormi Jane stands out to me and gives you nickname potential with SJ.

jamoncrumpets · 02/12/2022 10:11

My kids class is so full of Lexie-Mais and Lennons that her quite traditional name is the exception. In fact she's the only one with her name in the whole school. Wouldn't have been the case in the 80s.

gonutkin · 02/12/2022 10:11

@PatriciaPattersonGimlin yeah that's not fair at all.. unfortunately not everyone is going to have the same taste and if you were asked for your opinion you shouldn't be made to feel bad for giving it.

lifeinthehills · 02/12/2022 10:11

I guarantee all the blokes in my office would be making porn star jokes if they came across a Stormi. Probably to her face, given the chance.

Which they should be pulled up for. Unacceptable office behaviour. If done to her face, unacceptable harassment.

LakieLady · 02/12/2022 10:13

I once worked with a woman called Waverley. I thought it was lovely and asked where it was from. It's a river going through the Norfolk Broads - her parents loved the area.

I thought the Norfolk river was the Waveney. There's a Waveney district council, and I was sure it was named after the river.

There's a series of novels known as the Waverley novels, by Walter Scott iirc.
