Merit

What does everyone think of the girl's name Merit? I floated it to my husband the other day and, surprisingly, he said he liked it.

It has a lot of uses in different cultures: it's ancient Egyptian (meaning 'beloved'), is a (sort of) virtue name in English and is a diminutive of Margaret in various European languages.

We have a girl's name chosen already (Hero) but twins run in my family so there's a chance we might end up with two 😂 Plus, names are fun 😅

Big brother to be is Gilbert.

As you have asked, I think it is awful and would be a lot to carry around for 90 odd years.

ladydimitrescu · 27/11/2022 19:17

You can't have twins called hero and merit op - please don't 😳

Pixiedust1234 · 27/11/2022 19:20

Sorry no. I don't like any of the three names you have posted and I don't think they go together at all.

Out of curiosity do you and your dh have normal names?

DisforDarkChocolate · 27/11/2022 19:20

I think it's lovely, i'd think it an odd choice if you weren't from a country where is was much more common.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 27/11/2022 19:45

Imo both Hero and Merit are bizarre. What if Hero turns out to be a little mouse of a thing that’s scared of her own shadow? Why not just choose a proper name? There are thousands to choose from.

fairycupcakes · 27/11/2022 19:47

Sorry OP I’d have to agree - Merit is a lot to carry around and Hero is dreadful - very difficult to live up to for most. Neither go with Gilbert.

Iwritethissittinginthekitchensink · 27/11/2022 19:50

Hero and Merit sounds like best and second best - like exam results.

At least go for Hero and Distinction if you must! 😂

Pictograph · 27/11/2022 19:52

How about Merryl?

BedTaker · 27/11/2022 19:52

Um....where to even start?!

Purplecatshopaholic · 27/11/2022 19:53

Hero, Merit (Merit??), and Gilbert…! Please don’t op.

Taxiparent · 27/11/2022 19:54

When I was at school a reward point was called a Merit Mark, so there is you middle name sorted too!

BelenaConhamHarter · 27/11/2022 19:54

I know a Marit, very similar but not quite Merit.

Merit got a merit? Sound okay?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 27/11/2022 19:56

I am surprised to find that I like it Shock

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 27/11/2022 19:57

Wouldn't it be Heroine? Or Hera?
Merit isn't something I would choose either tbh.
Gilbert is unusual but far nicer!

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 27/11/2022 19:57

No. Just no.

i would also stay away from Hero.

MayISuggestSomeThickCutSteakChipsToGoWithThat · 27/11/2022 19:58

She'll MERIT a life time of having the piss taken out of her!!

catsonahottinroof · 27/11/2022 19:59

Are you from Estonia? As I knew a girl from there once named that. If not, it might sound a bit strange as people might think you are referring an exam grade.

MassiveSalad22 · 27/11/2022 20:00

I like it as a sound but too much opportunity for piss taking really. Also you cannot do Hero and Merit…. Merit is what you win if you weren’t quite good enough to get a medal in lots of competitions, like Highly Commended.

EverybodyDance · 27/11/2022 20:01

Hero and Celebration surely.

Merit and Gilbert don't go together in the slightest.

cushioncovers · 27/11/2022 20:02

Dreadful names. Sorry

Glitterbiscuits · 27/11/2022 20:02

No. And not Hero either.
Pretentious

Anything else on your list?

catsonahottinroof · 27/11/2022 20:02

Hera and Athena? Lots of possibilities!

Ellessdee · 27/11/2022 20:02

Hero 😅

Thighdentitycrisis · 27/11/2022 20:03

No
I like Gilbert though
Meredith? Hera

RandomMusings7 · 27/11/2022 20:04

Hero is atrocious... just absolutely embarrassing and plain horrible. Poor baby...

Merit is also awful. Not quite on the same scale as Hero, but still no bueno.

You are naming actual human beings. They are not pets, they are not vessels for you to express your younique-ness... give them normal names if you love them
