Merit

What does everyone think of the girl's name Merit? I floated it to my husband the other day and, surprisingly, he said he liked it.

It has a lot of uses in different cultures: it's ancient Egyptian (meaning 'beloved'), is a (sort of) virtue name in English and is a diminutive of Margaret in various European languages.

We have a girl's name chosen already (Hero) but twins run in my family so there's a chance we might end up with two 😂 Plus, names are fun 😅

Big brother to be is Gilbert.

@Glitterbiscuits
was “Pretentious” a suggestion?

Pepsipepsi · 27/11/2022 20:06

Before I clicked this thread I thought probably a troll. After seeing Hero and Gilbert... Definitely a troll.

FFS is you are serious give your children a name that won't get them mercilessly bullied. I have a uncommon but not unheard of name and the teasing I endured was bad enough.

Haus1234 · 27/11/2022 20:07

I wouldn’t choose it myself but Hero is a classical (Greek) and Shakespearean female name, so everyone suggesting Hera / Heroine is just showing their ignorance.

It does not go well with Merit.

Eixample · 27/11/2022 20:07

Hero isn’t an unheard of name for a girl. Probably skews a bit upper middle class though. Merit I would mishear as Marit but the sound is nice.

ByGrabtharsHammarWhatASaving · 27/11/2022 20:08

Hate Merit, love Hero (from Hero and Leander, right?) Gilbert is a brilliant name - he's obviously already here so you don't need opinions on it, but I love it!

Dragonskin · 27/11/2022 20:08

Hero is terrible, but Merit is worse

Lightowl · 27/11/2022 20:09

You are naming actual human beings. They are not pets, they are not vessels for you to express your younique-ness... give them normal names if you love them

This.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 27/11/2022 20:10

Merit might work in Egypt but it doesn't work as a child's name in an English-speaking country. It's just a word. You might as well have Rosette or Raffle or Bingo. (NB Those are not suggestions for names.)

RandomCatGenerator · 27/11/2022 20:11

Merritt like Merritt Weaver? Yeah it’s ok. Merit as in ‘highly commended’ - no, not good.

I hate Gilbert and I think Hero is a bit weird despite Shakespearean connotations.

fUNNYfACE36 · 27/11/2022 20:13

Are youveven pregnant?

BabyYoZenZen · 27/11/2022 20:14

I would spell it Marit so that it doesn't sound like the degree outcome 'merit'

TheBirdintheCave · 27/11/2022 20:15

Iwritethissittinginthekitchensink · 27/11/2022 19:50

Hero and Merit sounds like best and second best - like exam results.

At least go for Hero and Distinction if you must! 😂

Oh wow I didn't think of that! 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

If your child is average at playing a musical instrument they are likely to get a Merit for their exams.

"How did your Grade 3 piano exam go Merit?"
"I got a Merit."

Please don't do that to a child.

JogOnNed · 27/11/2022 20:18

Nice trolling.

TheBirdintheCave · 27/11/2022 20:21

Ok, no to Merit then 😂 Thanks for your opinions! 🥰

Hero is staying though. As someone above said, it is genuinely a name and we love it. My husband's favourite Shakespeare play is 'Much Ado About Nothing'. It's funny though, the last time I mentioned it here it got really good reactions. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤔 I guess it's a bit of a marmite name.

wildpeaches · 27/11/2022 20:24

I think Hero is fab OP. Very Shakespearean and I'm sure most of the posters laughing about it here have no idea the literacy and classical history behind it.

Merit not so much. How about Merryn instead?

Childcare101 · 27/11/2022 20:25

Given that you have chosen Gilbert for your boy I'm in no way surprised that you like the names hero (myleene klass springs to mind) and merit.

I really don't like any of them but think if u have a Gilbert already and you end up with twins go ahead with those names they are awful and therefore in keeping with each other.

MakkaPakkas · 27/11/2022 20:27

My immediate thought is that a merit is not as good as a distinction.
Pass 40% or 50% plus
Merit 60% plus
Distinction 70% plus

Nice if spelled as Merritt (like Merritt Wever, as mentioned above)

Blueuggboots · 27/11/2022 20:31

Hero??? Merit???

No.

ofwarren · 27/11/2022 20:32

Twin dogs, yes. Children? Not so much.

Exasperatednow · 27/11/2022 20:35

I like Hero but rather a sad Shakesperean character. I'm afraid I don't like Merit. Why not Ophelia or Imogen if going Shakespearean.

I like Gilbert btw.

tunthebloodyalarmoff · 27/11/2022 20:35

No but made me think of verit and then verity which is very nice
