Anneliese or Amelia?

I'm very stuck between these two for a newborn due in January.

Neither have sentimental value, so I'm completely open to opinions or other options. Throw a spanner in the works!

Anneliese. There's so many Amelias. I know an adult Amelia and she hates her name.

QuackMooBaaOink · 23/11/2022 12:44

Also worth considering how you feel about shortened versions. As Anneliese is quite a long name, chances are it will end up shortened to Anna or similar.

Theoldwoman · 23/11/2022 12:45

Amelia.

Too many different spellings between the latter. My friends DD is spelt Annahlise.

fruitbrewhaha · 23/11/2022 12:54

Thats an odd spelling, I thought it was Annaleise, Anna at the beginning, not Annel. And not Annahlise, that is just weird.

There are a lot of Amelias around.

tunthebloodyalarmoff · 23/11/2022 13:00

Neither

BlueSuffragette · 23/11/2022 13:02

I prefer Anna, Annie or Amelia.

Amelia is lovely!

Generalmanageroftheuniverse · 23/11/2022 13:04

Annelise. Very pretty.

buckleten · 23/11/2022 13:05

How about Amelie? Kind of a cross between the two!

TalkisChips · 23/11/2022 13:17

Out of the two, Annalise. Because Amelia is everywhere.

Rauha · 23/11/2022 13:19

Anneliese

Pemba · 23/11/2022 13:26

Anneliese, it's very pretty and more unusual now. I also love Anna, which she may end up being called for short. Is that the original (German?) spelling? I do know that to begin it with 'Anna..' is not really correct, although it seems more logical to English speakers.

Amelia is quite pretty too, but it's been very popular for a few years so there are loads of them around.

Penguinsaregreat · 23/11/2022 13:30

Amelia’s are everywhere so I’d go with Anneliese. However, prepare for everyone to spell it wrong so I wouldn’t use it. I prefer Anna.

Gummibär · 23/11/2022 13:42

I thought it was Annaleise

Definitely not that spelling Grin It means Anna quiet!

SeasonaIVag · 23/11/2022 13:44

My friend anneliese at school was beautiful and clever and I always envied her name.

Dontaskdontget · 23/11/2022 13:46

They are both lovely but I know so so many Amelias.

strawberrydress · 23/11/2022 13:48

I love the name Anneliese, it was on our list but all the different spellings put me off. Just on this thread alone I think you’ve already had 5 variations! I know one who spells it Annalisa.

Amelia is nice but there are so many of them.

Maybe Adelaide? Aria? Ariana? Allegra?

ShuttersThatShut · 23/11/2022 13:50

Annalisa
Amelie
Annalise

I don't know a single Amelia, despite it being very popular for over a decade. I have 2 school age children too.

KirstenBlest · 23/11/2022 13:55

I'd use the Annalise spelling.
I don't like Amelia but it's very popular.
Annalise will probably be shortened, so I'd just name her Annie or Anna, which I prefer to your suggestions.

username8888 · 23/11/2022 13:58

Annaliese. I also love Liesel. Also German ..

username8888 · 23/11/2022 13:59

Spelling is correct for German and as it's a German name I believe

KirstenBlest · 23/11/2022 13:59

Isn't it Liesl?

AnnaMagnani · 23/11/2022 14:04

The spelling of Anneliese is correct for German.

However as you can see from this thread, even when people can copy it, it is forever spelt wrong. And don't get me on to pronouncing it.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 23/11/2022 14:47

I much prefer Annaliese although would fully except that it would be often misspelt.

I don't like the mealy bit of Amelia. And the medical condition of the same name puts me off a bit. Though that might be niche.
