Anneliese or Amelia?

I'm very stuck between these two for a newborn due in January.

Neither have sentimental value, so I'm completely open to opinions or other options. Throw a spanner in the works!

Yes, it probably is - that's why it will be much easier to spell and pronounce for English speakers (than Anneliese).

No it's Liesel. In German you say every letter, no silent ones and 'ie' is pronounced ee, and 'ei' is pronounced I. So Lee sel 😀

There's far far too many Amelia's around (I'm a teacher). I'd go for something else.

I have an adult relation called Annalise. Strictly pronounced with 4 syllables (An-nuh-leace-suh in Scandinavia) but you can always say Ann-leese which is also lovely. She often calls herself Annie now as friends (in England) tended to call her that when she was younger. I think Annalise is a name that is great for a child but also suits an adult and is feminine and interesting.

I didn't say Liesl wasn't a legitimate spelling. I just 'suggested' Liesel as a name and was told it was Liesl. I would say Liesel as a spelling as it's simpler to spell. It can obviously be spelled both ways.

Anneliese is beautiful. It was on our list, but with a long foreign surname I felt it was kindest to pick something short and straightforward.

Love Liesel too. I used to know a Lieselotte, which I thought was gorgeous.

@username8888 , I only know the name from the film, so it looked wrong, sort of like Diesel. If you are german and know several Liesels then you are likely to be right. The name might be spelt differently in different countries or something. I think it's a nice name.

You can’t even compare Anneliese and Amelia.

Anneliese is strong, classy and beautiful and Amelia is done to death and on top of that is a medical term for someone without limbs.

Definitely Anneliese (or possibly slightly simplified to Annelise) for me. Amelia is not horrible by any means, but Anneliese feels a bit fresher and more interesting somehow.

I don't like either name OP. Is it A names you like for girls?

Annalise sounds like aniseed also folk (probably immature boys) can easily pick out a rude word in her name..

they are both very pretty names, however i do think amelia is overused at the moment--i know so many baby girl amelias.
i would choose anneliese for this reason. i am from the states and the way that i would think to pronounce it just from looking at it is ahn-uh-leece
