Finding out gender in about a week or so. Quite like the name Lara

Although DH used to fancy Lara Croft when he was a teen, his family all know about it. Would it be weird to then name our baby it 😂

It’s one of the only names I actively dislike. I can’t pin down why though, I’ve known a few and some have been lovely and some have been hard work!

MOTY1995 · 11/11/2022 14:19

Yes that would be weird

spiderlight · 11/11/2022 14:19

Yes, I love it. It's strong, uncomplicated, and pretty without being cutesy.

Beamur · 11/11/2022 14:21

Yes. I like it.

FayCarew · 11/11/2022 14:21

Yes, but there are lots of L names popular at the moment (Lyra, Luna, Lola, Lila, Lily, Layla etc) so it seems a bit samey.

DaftyLass · 11/11/2022 14:23

I may be biased, but I work with a Lara and she is pretty amazing!
Nothing but good vibes for me

Runover · 11/11/2022 14:27

Yes I like it. Not sure about the Lara Croft thing tho....

Bideshi · 11/11/2022 14:28

Dr Zhivago. Lovely

summergone · 11/11/2022 14:33

I like it

Beachsidesunset · 11/11/2022 14:42

I have a Lara. My association is Dr Zhivago, my husband's is Croft. We enjoy a mixed marriage Grin

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/11/2022 14:42

It’s nice

There are a lot of similar names about though - Leila, Lena, Lyra, Leah, Luna, Lila, Lola… this would put me off. Zara or Tara maybe?

Sallyingon · 11/11/2022 15:01

I like it a lot

BuryingAcorns · 11/11/2022 15:02

Yes I like it. It is pretty but not cutesy. Elegant too.

LightHousePanda · 11/11/2022 15:19

I like it. I don't know why but for me it stands out with the short L names so that wouldn't bother me. Maybe the r sound. I do think of Lara Croft too but I don't know about the connection with fancying a fictional character. I guess it's up to you both how you feel. Normally though I think the connection to Lara Croft is a good one as she's a character I like.

RingofBrodgar · 11/11/2022 15:23

Love it.

MadOnHer · 11/11/2022 15:25

I’ve always found it a bit wet.

Laura is classic.

I like Clara, Zara, Tara. So I should like Lara.

But it just feels bland and unfinished somehow.

IsThePopeCatholic · 11/11/2022 15:26

No. It’s a nothing name.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/11/2022 21:54

Love it - and suspect Lara could be a future classic (unless it suddenly surges in numbers and therefore dates - it's only been really used much since the 60's and Dr Zhivago so hard to tell at the moment).

I consider it part of the older Laura and Lorna group so see it as an ethereal, romantic sort of name (although yes, there is the kick ass Lara Croft thing too)- but be warned, others might see it as part of the Lyra, Lila, Lily/Lilly, Luna, Lola, Isla, Ellie, etc trend (basically that short, vowel/ L heavy names are everywhere at the moment for girls).

feellikeanalien · 11/11/2022 21:56

I've always loved the name Lara since the first time i watched Dr Zhivago.

I also know a very nice Lara in real life.

SuburbanMummy123 · 11/11/2022 21:58

It’s a lovely name 😅 I’m pregnant at the moment with a boy but my top girl pick would have been Clara

roisinrose · 11/11/2022 21:58

Love it
Hate Laura though

DramaAlpaca · 11/11/2022 22:02

It's pretty but sort of insubstantial, probably because it was originally a diminutive of the name Larissa.

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 11/11/2022 23:21

I know a beautiful brave soul called Lara. So the name for me will always be associated with her grace and dignity.

JellyfishandShells · 11/11/2022 23:23

I like it - charming for a child but also carries through well to adulthood.

Rustyhandlebars · 11/11/2022 23:31

I like it, sounds very grown up, so she will be comfortable being 50 with it.
