Finding out gender in about a week or so. Quite like the name Lara

Although DH used to fancy Lara Croft when he was a teen, his family all know about it. Would it be weird to then name our baby it 😂

I don't like it. Just a bit boring and 90's like

FearofQueefing · 12/11/2022 08:41

I love it. Really wanted it as our girl option by DH vetoed.

To me it sounds both feminine and strong - which is a tricky combo to find.

I really like the name Lara, it's classic solid & strong sounding in my opinion

Yes there are lots of other L names around but to me Lara feels much more solid rather than getting mixed up with Lily/Lillie/Lilly/Lyla/Luna

Lara makes me think of Dr Zhivago

Lara Croft not so much on my radar think I vaguely remember Angelina Jolie played that role

tulipsunday · 12/11/2022 09:36

I think it is lovely also like Clara

MassiveSalad22 · 12/11/2022 09:36

I like it on the page but when I say it it’s an odd mix of twee and snooty. I think it would only suit someone modelesque.

WhyOY · 12/11/2022 09:37

No

swirlypinky · 12/11/2022 09:38

I love it. And also love Laura

heathspeedwell · 12/11/2022 09:40

Love Lara.

But I hate Tara, Zara, Nara etc.

catbirddogchild · 12/11/2022 12:04

I like it, it's a nice name.
TBH fancying Lara croft as a teen is no big deal. Would it worry you being named after some star/character your dad once fancied? It wouldn't bother me. Might be a slight family joke but I doubt unusual I certainly know a few boys named after their mums teenage crushes. Also wasn't Lara Croft some kind of action hero???? ( not my thing so don't know the details). If some it's hardly offensive.

JamSandle · 12/11/2022 12:38

I think it's very pretty and lyrical.

whatausername · 12/11/2022 13:38

To answer your title, not in the slightest. Can't put my finger on why.

And it's a bit odd with the crush thing. It would partly depend on whether the family still makes any jokes about it? With so many other names out there I'm not sure I'd appreciate being named after my dad's crush (who let's face it was only allowed to be a strong female character if she was also hyper sexy).

MollieMarie · 12/11/2022 13:50

I like it, but the Lara Croft association with your DH is just weird

ForgetBarbie · 12/11/2022 14:27

I love it. Hate Laura though yuck

User6761 · 12/11/2022 18:10

It's ok but much prefer Cara.

Violettaa · 12/11/2022 18:12

Its fine, but Zara/ Tara / Cara are less bland.

In DD’s nursery group there are 8 girls, including 2 Lyras and 2 Lylas. So that would put me off similar names.

fairycupcakes · 12/11/2022 18:46

I don’t know.. I think I would find it quite strange but based on Lara you might like:

Alora
Ellora
Clara
or Zara?
