What do you think?

OP posts:

Right, so you want to give your child a name even you can't spell? 🙄

I was at school with 2 girls, one was Mellony and the other was Jewlee. This was in the 60s when "youneek" names were most certainly not a thing. In both cases the names were registered by their fathers who couldn't spell.

How about Dave?

CanofCant · 18/10/2022 14:02

OP first heard the name on the radio. Don't be such a bully.

MajorCarolDanvers · 18/10/2022 14:08

@HairyMcLarie

Yes but when did you last meet a child called Sho'Vaughan? Or Neev?

Neve is a fairly common name and I do know a Shivonne

TenoringBehind · 18/10/2022 14:08

It is my father’s name. He hates it so much that he has always been known by his middle name,

'Why, that's very nearly an armful!'

(Nobody will get that reference)

Why would you think that?

Hbh17 · 18/10/2022 14:11

Will forever be Sebastian Flyte's bear......and a very noble bear, at that!

I encountered an Aloysius in a book I read as a child (no idea what it was) and spent the entire book pronouncing it 'ALLOY-see-us' in my head.

Me too! It was one of those names I read in a book as a child/teen and pronounced as I read it. So Alloy-Zee-Oos. Poor old Percy-phone got the same treatment. My mum laughed herself silly.

Wonder if it was the same book?

PortiasBiscuit · 18/10/2022 14:19

I like Ovaloffis and Sidebored.

Soozikinzii · 18/10/2022 14:19

My son who is 33 is called Joseph Aloysius and he likes it anyway!

urbanbuddha · 18/10/2022 14:22

I like it.
I see the mean girls are out in force on this thread.

You could try reading the thread first so you don’t look like such a nasty idiot.

I've known a few Aloysiuses over the years (I'm Catholic, so it's to be expected). I don't really have strong feelings about it either way. Aloysius Gonzaga was a decent saint, but there are several dozen above him on my list of personal devotions. And his Italian name was Luigi, it's never been clear to me how that got such a terrible anglicisation. Obviously the literary associations aren't great and it's not a phonetic/obvious spelling. So, for all those reasons, I wouldn't choose it as a baby name myself, but I wouldn't raise an eyebrow at meeting another one.

Bananamaman · 18/10/2022 14:28

I quite like it (with the correct spelling). As pp said, it's a very Catholic name so you may find people may assumptions about your religion.

crosstalk · 18/10/2022 14:32

I like the name, but like Gerard it is a saint's name that for some reason hasn't spread beyond the RC community as Benedict has done. As for spelling, there are so many basic names that are lovely that catch primary children out like Catherine - C or K? second e an a? To say nothing of their teachers.

Sebastian's teddy bear.

My twin son's name is Sebastian (loved the name since I read it in that book) Before they were born, I used to jokingly call his twin Aloysius, but she turned out to be a girl!

shedwithivy · 18/10/2022 14:48

Aloysius o'hare is the baddy in the Lorax

Benjispruce4 · 18/10/2022 14:50

I’ve but I’m familiar with it as brought up Catholic and have been to various St Aloysius churches. I know an Austrian Alois too.

Tony Hancock?

BellePeppa · 18/10/2022 14:58

I can only imagine the amount of teachers whose eyes will roll when seeing Alowicious. For the love of god, no!

Nap1983 · 18/10/2022 15:00

This was my grandfathers middle name… utterly fucking redic for a child unless your trying exceptionally hard to portray yourself as gentry 😂😂😂

ErrolTheDragon · 18/10/2022 15:02

In homage to the lad himself, maybe Alowicious Sinjun?

DogInATent · 18/10/2022 15:06

I think misspelling it in the thread title tells you everything you need to know about it as a name choice OP. You've very much answered your own question just by asking it.

Benjispruce4 · 18/10/2022 15:16

@BellePeppa not at all, it’s a classic name and teachers wouldn’t bat an eyelid. These days there are all sorts of names, new and old.

HappyChickenEggs · 18/10/2022 15:19

Aloysius was actually on my short list for middle names. I think you should name your imaginary child this.

Marblessolveeverything · 18/10/2022 15:22

Niamh and Siobhan are perfectly understandable in Ireland - where the names are from! honestly some people are so insular!
