Sounds like some sort of fad 'health' drink or something. 😆

'Why, that's very nearly an armful!'

(Nobody will get that reference)

Why on earth not? You can’t be the only special person who knows who Tony Hancock, one of Britain’s most celebrated comedians, is.

Ds1's middle name is Aloysius. Dh loves the name as it's a character in his favourite book series.

It's also the first name of the mammoth in Sesame Street and Parker in thunderbirds.

Dh wanted it as a first name but we came up with something else as we felt a lifetime of spelling and pronouncing his first name would drive us all nuts.

Mr Snuffleupagus' first name is Aloysius?? Who knew!

SouthOfFrance · 18/10/2022 13:10

I like it. I think Lou can be the short version of it

Longdistance · 18/10/2022 13:12

Are you drunk dear? tilts head

LargeglassofRosePlease · 18/10/2022 13:13

Fucking terrible name

Sago1 · 18/10/2022 13:14

Aloysius Gonzaga was an Italian aristocrat who became a Jesuit priest.
He died aged 23 after helping plague victims in Rome, he contacted the disease himself.
He was beatified in 1605.

Evelyn Waugh used the name Aloysius in the novel Brideshead Revisited, Aloysius was Sebastian Flyte’s teddy bear.
Waugh had visited Stonyhurst school, a Jesuit boarding school in Lancashire, as a young man and eventually sent his sons there.
Stonyhurst was the Alma Mater of the Earl of Brideshead in the novel.

Our sons went to the school and amongst the community there Aloysius would not be thought of as an odd name.

St Aloysius was a good man and I think are worse names out there (Jayden) so don’t be put off!

Had I not read Brideshead and had the connection with school I would not have had a clue how to spell it! :)

Of course not. But how many people know the first of his middle names? Lighten up, won't you?

endofthelinefinally · 18/10/2022 13:19

Very popular name at my DC's primary school. We had lots of really interesting names from different countries and cultures. I like it because of its history, but you do have to spell names properly IMO because the child has to live with it.

batshitballs · 18/10/2022 13:23

Reminds me of that scene in Mary Poppins

I spelt it wrong (only gave it a really quick Google) I mean Aloysius.

Heard it on the radio, wondered what people thought of the name...

I love the name Aloysius. It was on my list but DH wouldn't budge.

EllaPaella · 18/10/2022 13:28

It's the name of the nasty lead weasel in Wind of the Willows so would always make me think of that.

magicstar1 · 18/10/2022 13:30

This reminds of a woman I have as friend of friend on Facebook.
She wanted to name her child after Lucius Malfoy from Harry Potter, but she has spelled it Luscious. He'll spend his whole life correcting people.

Stayathomenamechange · 18/10/2022 13:43

Would be a great middle name. If the first name were Supercalifragilisticeexpi.

Beamur · 18/10/2022 13:45

Awesome name.

SirGawain · 18/10/2022 13:47

Not unless you are Anthony Hancock!

spiderlight · 18/10/2022 13:48

I encountered an Aloysius in a book I read as a child (no idea what it was) and spent the entire book pronouncing it 'ALLOY-see-us' in my head.

BitOutOfPractice · 18/10/2022 13:52

I met someone called Leeham this morning. Pronounced Liam I presume.
