Archie for a girl?

Having second girl in December and just watched the Lazarus project and there is a character Archie (think shirt for Archana in her case)

Never met a female Archie but it's growing on me. But can't shake the fact she'll likely always be expected to turn up and be a boy unless it really catches on in popularity!

Thoughts?

Do you know what, I absolutely love it for a girl. I think it’s brilliant. However, I may not be the best judge as when I was a teenager I always wanted Sydney as a girl’s name if I ever had a girl.

For full disclosure both my boy and girl children have very boring names.

go for it!

Love Sydney for a girl, for a boy it sounds like an old man with a flat cap (Tetley teabags 😂) but for a girl is lovely.

@Libre2 , I'm not convinced that Megan is originally welsh. I think it's a name that was picked up by the welsh because it looks Welsh.
There's a bit of a difference between using a name from your own country to using one from a different country and religion.

Have to spend her whole life explaining it. I once met a female Aiden. It got very confusing in a hospital setting.

A friend's sister is Archie, from Archana. They are of Gujarati origin. It would be an unusual name outside of the South Asian community. I'm laughing at 'its more traditionally a boy's name. In Britain (save as above), it is a boy's name.

A diminutive in another culture is one thing. Giving your child an actual name that’s ridiculous on them would be an awful thing to do.

Archana sounds like Arachnophobia so her nickname will be spider. Archie is a boys name, shortened from Archibald. Nickname will be baldy. Not a good choice?

If you are south Asian and want to give your daughter the lovely name of Archana, that would be fine.
Otherwise it's a big fat no.

To all those brutal 'why would you do that to her?!' Pretty offensive to a lot of Asian families where it is a popular shortened name!

I think it's an intriguing name because it actually sounds very feminine as the shortened version more feminine than masculine and yet has been adopted mainly as a male name historically. If I were coming to it with no prior knowledge (or from a different culture) I think it does sound like a girls name.

Appreciate consensus is heavily on the No side! Grin

I agree, as a shortened name it's fine...Mel is short for Melvyn and Melanie or Melissa afterall, more usual for a girl in my social circle

I think that as Archie is a very popular, somewhat well overused name (at least in my area) boys name, the majority of people would not get over that and you should consider that aswell as just considering what name you like.

There's a gravestone in a cemetery near us, of a woman called Archibella. Though I guess she was probably called Bella for short.
Still, it's an option!
