Lana backwards

I like Lana. It's been brought to my attention that it spells sphincter backwards. Should I be concerned about this? I mean you could create a problem with pretty much any name, right?

Marissa - Ass I Ram
Sarah - (almost) harass
Natasha - Ah Satan
Naomi - I Moan
Regina - vagina
Lucy - loo seat
Louisa - loo easer
Richard - dick
Violet - violent
Celeste - molest, incest
Ophelia - Oh Feel Ya
Polly - polyester

Etc etc. Does it matter?

It doesn't spell sphincter, it spells anal backwards. If you can't say it, you know other people will and will bully her for it.

It's a nice name though 🤷🏻‍♀️

coffeeandpoetry · 03/10/2022 13:38

Ass I Ram? 😂 😂 I genuinely don't think anyones made that association with Marissa apart from you

SpinningFloppa · 03/10/2022 13:39

I know a Lana who gets called anal, it’s a shame as it’s a nice name otherwise

iekanda · 03/10/2022 13:42

Use Alana with nn Lana

happyinherts · 03/10/2022 13:43

Depends on how much you like the name.

Everyone gets a nickname during their school years. Spelling names backwards to find it would probably be in the same vein as your polly + polyester example. Personally, I don't think it matters that much. The average child wouldn't make the connection, and when she's old enough that people might, like I say everyone gets a nickname anyway. Less you make of it, the less people will comment.

Luredbyapomegranate · 03/10/2022 13:45

None of these names actually resemble a word that is similarly undesirable, other than Regina which I think most people would also avoid. I guess Lucy.. but it’s such a common name and anyway most people say toilet not loo.

Anyway, your are stretching your point,
I think Lana is probably fine, but if you’re worried call her Lena.

However there so many similar names about - Lara, Lola, Leila, Lyra, Luna, Leah, Lila - they all blur into one so I would personally find something else

NannyR · 03/10/2022 13:47

It might be a problem for a couple of years in secondary school by a few people, but that's such a tiny percentage of her life. It's a great name and it wouldn't stop me using it.

Ariela · 03/10/2022 13:49

I know an Alana who is always called Lana

luckyRhino · 03/10/2022 13:49

It's a nice name op.
That list had me crying though 😂

Jazzydrops · 03/10/2022 13:50

If you like the name I would called her Alannah (spelt that way) and just call her Lannah for short, therefore losing the dodgier spelling.

DismantledKing · 03/10/2022 13:51

I’ve joust noticed that Alan is also an anagram of anal. Never seen that before.

20viona · 03/10/2022 13:52

My daughter is called Lana, I absolutely love it and always get so many compliments on it. I knew the backward spelling before but it wasn't a concern of ours.

Lindy2 · 03/10/2022 13:52

Lanah
Lena
Alana
Alannah
Alayna
Layna
Larna

All similar alternatives without the issue.

The baby name book we had actually had Anal as a girl's name. Presumably pronounced A-nahl. Poopie was also a name in this particular book. Until baby was born we told everyone she was going to be called Anal Poopie. 😁

Bananalanacake · 03/10/2022 14:03

I am always attracted to Lana threads as I have one. I went into her room and she'd written ANAL in magnetic letters on her Lidl chalk board, (It comes with letters). She was so pleased with herself as she'd learnt to spell her name backwards, she asked if it is also a name and thinks it is pronounced Ann-arl.

caitlinrose · 03/10/2022 14:21

In my opinion it doesn't matter. I know three Lanas. One is Svetlana "Lana" the other two are just Lana and they never had any problems.

It's a gorgeous name and makes me think of Lana Turner and Lana Lang.

Primary school kids are too young to know the word and when they hit puberty the reading-names-backwards thing shouldn't happen anymore.

By the way, I don't think similar names really avoid the issue (not that I think it needs to be avoided as I know three women with the name who never had any problems):

Alana - I had a friend named this and when I said it quickly it sometimes came out as Anala accidentally. I still think it's a lovely name but sounds much more like "anal" and looks much more like it than Lana does. Lana only has the backwards-issue with Alana the actual name reminds me of the word and it is a bit of a tongue-twister. Alan is also an anagram for "anal".

Lanah - this is "hanal" backwards, does it really make a difference? "hanal" will still remind people of "anal".

I'd personally much rather have a pretty name like Lana which means something odd backwards than an (in my opinion) not very attractive name like Larna or Lanah. In the end the name will always be said Lana and not be read backwards.

You have far too much time on your hands. Get a hobby.

LordEmsworth · 03/10/2022 14:27

Not half term yet is it?

OnlyJoking1 · 03/10/2022 14:56

Eliott is an anagram of Toilet.
In the school years I’m sure kids will be teased about their name or something else, go with what you like.

FangsForTheMemory · 03/10/2022 20:18

Isn’t it short for Svetlana?

TheSmallestOneWasMadeline · 03/10/2022 20:21

Does anyone remember a website called fml.com? This thread reminded me of a story on there of a girl who made one of those projecter things so her name would be lit up on her wall, but didnt realise it would be the mirror image unless she wrote it backwards. Her name was Lana.

tiddlywinks2 · 03/10/2022 20:23

In tears crying at the list of names 😂😂😂 ass I ram. 😂

cooolio · 03/10/2022 20:26

Ass I ram 😂😂

cooolio · 03/10/2022 20:28

You've missed Orla. Family member has one and she doesn't even bother to change her autocorrect from Oral anymore.

"Oral's non-stop today" TMI 😅

bakewellbride · 03/10/2022 20:32

'Ass I ram' 😁😁😁

MmeMeursault · 03/10/2022 20:33
