Hi all,

currently expecting my first baby girl and can’t seem to choose between the names Daphne and Ariadne.

Hubby is French, I am Greek and we are keen to find an easily pronounced name in all languages (including ENG of course!)

Thanks!!

I love Daphne

MiracleBaby2022 · 27/09/2022 21:14

I know a Daphne, half Greek - love it

Banana2079 · 27/09/2022 21:16

Ariadne is unusual which is Why I like it better Daphne is quite old fashioned and it’s pretty common
I am Greek too lol

JM10 · 27/09/2022 21:17

Daphne is definitely easier to pronounce, Ariadne made me pause and think how to say it, but I do prefer it.

LadyWithLapdog · 27/09/2022 21:18

I think Ariadne is nicer. My favourite Greek name is Olympia.

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 27/09/2022 21:18

I love Ariadne, are you a Poirot fan?!

pastaandpesto · 27/09/2022 21:21

I'm afraid I have no idea how to pronounce Ariadne!

Hempy · 27/09/2022 21:24

I like Clio, the muse of History but the French might associate the name with the Renault car.

What about another muse, Thalia..

Aria999 · 27/09/2022 21:28

I love Ariadne but it's a bit inauspicious.

Abandoned by Theseus.

Hempy · 27/09/2022 21:29

I quite like Daphne, to answer your question OP.

On a side note, I didn't realise Iris was a Greek name and that she's represented as a rainbow.

EdgeOfACoin · 27/09/2022 22:08

Ariadne.

RuthW · 27/09/2022 22:08

Both nice but I just prefer Ariadne.

Yika · 27/09/2022 22:11

Daphne for sure. Lovely name and works well in every language.

toastofthetown · 27/09/2022 22:19

I much prefer Ariadne. Daphne is soaring in popularity in England and Wales (I imagine in part due to Bridgerton) and I see I brought up often on name boards so I think the trend has lots of life in it yet. Ariadne is a familiar name, but much less common. Probably more pronunciation issues but I imagine most in England would be able to pronounce it. I also think Ariadne has such a nicer sound than Daphne.

Luredbyapomegranate · 27/09/2022 22:21

Ariadne - fantastic name

Daphne’s a bit daffy

Jleome · 27/09/2022 22:22

Alexia is both French and Greek and pronounced easily in English. Out of two of your options I would say Ariandne

ladygindiva · 27/09/2022 22:23

Daphne is so cool x

Toomuchschool · 27/09/2022 22:23

Daphne! It’s a gorgeous name.

APurpleSquirrel · 27/09/2022 22:27

Ariadne definitely! Lovely name.

Cheeselog · 27/09/2022 22:27

Ariadne - beautiful name. Daphne is a bit naff and Scooby Doo.

APurpleSquirrel · 27/09/2022 22:27

pastaandpesto · 27/09/2022 21:21

I'm afraid I have no idea how to pronounce Ariadne!

Ari-ad-nee

Eddieisadick · 27/09/2022 22:29

Isn’t Ariadne something to do with a massive spider. I mean I like spiders but that still makes me yeuch
