Hi all,

currently expecting my first baby girl and can’t seem to choose between the names Daphne and Ariadne.

Hubby is French, I am Greek and we are keen to find an easily pronounced name in all languages (including ENG of course!)

Thanks!!

Ariadne is too much and it's not a very pleasant sound. People will struggle to pronounce and spell it.

Daphne is better

Upsidedownagain · 27/09/2022 23:02

If I had to choose, Ariadne. Ari for short. Daphne sounds very old fashioned to me. But I'm not keen on either, so no help really!

BeachStripes · 27/09/2022 23:02

I know it isn’t linked but like PP Ariadne does make me think of spiders. But I do like Daphne.

Also love Artemis and Delphine (could be Delphi for short)

DramaAlpaca · 27/09/2022 23:48

I absolutely adore Daphne.

Ariadne is OK, but nothing like as fabulous as Daphne.

Elspethelf · 28/09/2022 06:58

Ariadne. Nicknames are out of your control but if nicknames happen, I think Ariadne will have better ones

Dreamingcats · 28/09/2022 07:22

I love Greek names!

I prefer Daphne as I also prefer shorter names.

Sophieagain1984 · 28/09/2022 07:24

I like both but slightly prefer Ariadne. I’m old enough that Daphne reminds me of Des and Daphne.

Clarabellawilliamson · 28/09/2022 07:29

I know sisters called Daphne and Ariadne! They are both still primary school age. No one has trouble pronouncing or spelling either of them. I think people underestimate the diversity of names there will be in your childrens classes at school.

I think I prefer the name Ariadne, perhaps because it sounds more Greek to me.

Ariadne! Lovely name.

Ellmau · 01/10/2022 19:20

Both are nice. I prefer Ariadne but Daphne will probably be easier for people to spell and pronounce.

Ariadne is beautiful

MotherofLs · 01/10/2022 19:31

Both beautiful but I adore Ariadne!

I think I would avoid Daphne at the moment. It might get popular because of Bridgerton and I personally don't really think it's a high quality show but very much soap-opera like and a bit corny. The nickname Daph isn't attractive to me and I think in mythology she was turned into a laurel tree in order to avoid being violated by a man.

Ariadne is gorgeous.

I personally also like Phoebe.

Isn’t Ariadne something to do with a massive spider. I mean I like spiders but that still makes me yeuch

In Greek legend, Ariadne gave Theseus a ball of string so he could escape the labyrinth after killing the Minotaur.

Longdarkcloud · 01/10/2022 19:59

Ariadne is refreshingly different. Daphne is rather stuffy and almost certainly at some point to be shortened to Daph or Daphy (Daffy Duck).
I love Athena, Artemis, Alexia

MassiveSalad22 · 01/10/2022 20:13

Ariadne! Lovely. I don’t understand how someone can’t work out how to pronounce it - it’s literally as it’s spelled. Like a lot of Greek names. Only downside is it reminds me a bit of the name Adrian in the way it looks.

I know a baby Daphne and a couple of old lady Daphnes. I prefer the sounds of Ariadne and think it has better shortening options.

That's Arachne.

Ariadne is a great name and like a pp love the nn Ari (also the name of the singer from The Splits)
