What do you think of the name Linda ?

It's a bit 80s for me personally. Belinda is nicer imo.

Libre2 · 25/09/2022 21:52

Quite 70s. We have a lovely friend called Linda so I have positive connotations but it feels quite dated. Maybe Belinda shortened? For some reason that feels less old fashioned. No idea why.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 25/09/2022 21:55

A 45 Yr old HR manager. Sorry!! Its a nice name, but very 70s!

GAW19 · 25/09/2022 21:57

Every Linda I have known has been such a horrible pain in the arse Blush

SalviaOfficinalis · 25/09/2022 21:59

I don’t think the world is ready for baby Linda yet. 15-20 more years and it’ll be a lovely revival.

Stokey · 25/09/2022 21:59

More like 60-70 I'd say, I'm in my late 40s and all the Linda's I knew were more my mum's age. Similar vibe to Barbara or Susan (Sue).

Ship · 25/09/2022 22:00

I’m also not sure the world is ready. Lindy maybe

toastofthetown · 25/09/2022 22:00

Linda peaked in the fifties and as a general rule, names cycle in a hundred year cycle, or great-grandparents names (as the names of all your mum's friends will probably feel less fresh). Linda is more likely to be a grandma than a great-grandma, and so it's not quite ripe for a revival yet. It's considerably better than Belinda to me (though maybe My Dad Wrote a Porno has forever tainted Belinda).

DramaAlpaca · 25/09/2022 22:03

Eek no. I've detested that name ever since being bullied by one at primary school, so the associations are bad. Apart from that, it's a most unattractive name.

Cattenberg · 25/09/2022 22:03

It means “cute” in Spanish.

I like it and I think it will come round again. I know very few Lindas, so it doesn’t feel very dated to me.

pitterypattery00 · 25/09/2022 22:03

I'm good friends with a Linda in her early 40s. It's a nice name and not that different sounding to Lydia - and I've come across quite a few young Lydias.

Haus1234 · 25/09/2022 22:06

I prefer Melinda to Belinda. Lindy is nice!

ChampagneCamping · 25/09/2022 22:06

Lydia

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 25/09/2022 22:07

I remember reading an article about the name Linda that said it was the trendiest name in America in the 20th century having had the sharpest rise in popularity, which it retained for 20 years or so, and then experiencing an equally sharp decline.

Two syllable girls names ending in a seems to always be popular over the decades, eg. Sandra, Tina, Emma, Thea, Isla. so I can see objectively that there's nothing wrong with Linda. But it just seems dated but without having an appealing vintage vibe.

drpet49 · 25/09/2022 22:07

Hate it, one of the worst ever baby names

More like a 60 year old HR manager - it’s a 60s name -

It’s too early for a revival OP, Belinda is Ok

Montgomerymmoose · 25/09/2022 22:07

I don't know many Lindas to be honest so I've never thought of it being dated or not 🤔.
Nn would probably be Lindy .

Oh yes - Melinda is better

Beamur · 25/09/2022 22:09

I think it needs another generation to pass..still sounds dated.

user7817811 · 25/09/2022 22:10

needs a brother called Gary or Ian

Trees6 · 25/09/2022 22:14

It reminds me of gorgeous actresses in the 1970s and 1980s - Carter, Grey, Evans. Also the late-1980s/1990s supermodel Linda Evangelista. It has very glam connotations for me, therefore.
I don’t know of any IRL but a few of my schoolfriends had Auntie Lindas who’d be around 75-80 now.

User110922 · 25/09/2022 22:16

I think it's lovely. It's rare and as a previous poster said, it means cute or pretty in Spanish. Lindy is a really adorable nickname too.

This historical data from England and Wales is why most people will think it's dated, even if you don't. It appears for the first time in top hundred in 1944, peaked in 1954 and by 1974 it had dropped to 76th, and has been firmly out of the top hundred since then. Such a boom of popularity in a relatively short time means that when someone hears the name Linda, they have a (probably accurate) expectation that Linda was born around the 1950's.

I agree. I was born in the 70s and never met anyone my age called Linda. It was a mum name.
