Nathan or Ethan

I recently posted about the name Ethan which I had discounted for being a bit over done and boring. Feedback seems to be that it might feel dated to some but not really overdone so could still be a name contender.
Other name DH and I agree on is Nathan. Dislike Nathaniel, this is not an option, I think it has a completely different vibe.
We like both Nathan and the nn Nate.
So between Nathan and Ethan, which do you prefer and why?

I prefer Nathan, I love nicknames and think Nate is lovely nn.

Ethan doesn’t have any obvious nicknames

Tealpoppy · 24/09/2022 20:37

I have a Nathan-we call him nath
pits a nicer name than Ethan

Spanielsarepainless · 24/09/2022 20:42

Nathan.

mrsanflowerpot · 24/09/2022 20:44

I have a Nathan. We called him after someone with a nn Nate, but he regularly gets called Nats and Nath too. Definitely Nathan

Blowyourowntrumpet · 24/09/2022 20:46

I like them both. No help, sorry.

CambsAlways · 24/09/2022 20:47

Love Nathan and nate

FirstFallopians · 24/09/2022 20:49

Nathan by a mile.

He could be Nat, or Nate.

Ethan is just a bit blah.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 24/09/2022 20:49

I look after a man called Nathan and he’s the loveliest most gentle man.

A proper beautiful soul.

I hear the name and feel nothing but joy.

autumnvibez · 24/09/2022 20:53

Nathan

properdoughnut · 24/09/2022 20:55

Nathan. Sooo much better

YukoandHiro · 24/09/2022 20:55

Ethan

JustlookingNotbuying · 24/09/2022 20:55

I have a ds called Nathan. We call him Nath or Nathy Noodles (which he now hates because he’s 17 lol)

YukoandHiro · 24/09/2022 20:56

I see I'm being outvoted but for me Nathan just reminds me of Nathan Barley. Sorry!

MagpieCastle · 24/09/2022 20:58

Our Nathan is a joy; kind, funny and loving - so I’m probably a bit biased in my preference!

ladygindiva · 24/09/2022 21:00

Nathan feels more timeless , it's great.

wishing3 · 24/09/2022 21:02

Nathan, mostly based on liking Nate (though Nathan is perfectly nice too).

DramaAlpaca · 24/09/2022 21:50

Nathan by about a hundred miles. Why? Because you can use the fabulous Nate as a diminutive, and because Ethan is ghastly.

Dinoteeth · 24/09/2022 21:54

Nathan by a mile,
Ethan makes me think of a chemical ethanol or ethene I'd know two people who called their son it and I'd never say it out loud but that's what it makes me think of.

Needmorelego · 24/09/2022 21:57

I prefer Nathan of the two because I like the sound of the name Nate. Names pretty much always get shorted - especially boys when they get to the teen years.
Poor Ethan would end up as "Eeeth" (rhyming with Keith).
Go for Nathan.

CanaryShoulderedThorn · 25/09/2022 03:42

Nathan.

octoberfarm · 25/09/2022 03:55

Definitely Ethan!

oceanskye · 25/09/2022 04:25

I love Nathan, and also the nickname Nate, it was on my baby name list. Ethan is ok but I find it a bit boring too.

hernameis · 25/09/2022 04:48

Ethan every time! It's a lovely name and nice that it doesn't get shortened.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 25/09/2022 04:49

Nathan or Nathaniel.. nn Nate
Really dislike Ethan , that & Caleb are my two worst boy names .

Foxtrot101 · 25/09/2022 09:06

Great to see positive feedback on Nathan, my DH wondered if it was a bit "wet" and Ethan "stronger" but I think my preference is Nathan over Ethan.
