Just remembered the name Mavis and actually really like it! Can't use it as my dear niece is Maeve, but what do you think? And is there anything similar?

There is a 6 year old called Mavis in my DC's wraparound care program. I was so charmed the first time my DD mentioned her. Super surprising as it seems that little bit too old fashioned to be back in fashion, but I really like it.

WholeHog · 24/09/2022 05:18

My mind goes straight here (see photo) though that will be different for the younger generations.

FindingMeno · 24/09/2022 05:22

I'm not sure Mavis is due a comeback yet.

I was just wondering how to attach a photo - you beat me to it!

Trez1510 · 24/09/2022 05:52

Also not a fan of Mavis ... reminds me of Gladys, Elsie, Ethel, Betty etc. Sorry.

You could think about Morven or Marni if you're intent on a name beginning with 'M'?

Ancfib · 24/09/2022 15:00

I love it because it was my Grannys name! Haha so it does give me granny vibes but they are the best vibes imo!

We all used to call her Mave as a nick name though so I don't think it would work if you want to avoid Maeve

AncientMariner · 24/09/2022 15:15

Excellent name for a guinea-pig.

I’m amazed it hasn’t been revived - its so close to May, and no more granny-ish than Mabel and Elsie.

I like it...better than Edna if we're on the will o the whisp vibe! Was reminded of the name Hazel today..I think it's sweet and in the Olive and Ivy vein I think

NooNakedJacuzziness · 24/09/2022 16:33

Ooh I don't really know..

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 24/09/2022 16:40

I’m another person who thought Mavis Cruet. But given you’d have to be knocking 50 to remember this, I reckon it’d be fine to use.

Moveonswiftlyplease · 24/09/2022 16:40

I hate it! I can say that as you aren't going to use it.

LoveYouHoneybear · 24/09/2022 20:12

I do think it's worth a revival! And nicer than a lot of the trendy old lady names. Some of these suggestions are great too.

I once taught a lovely girl called Mevish (which is of Pakistani origin). I always thought that sounded like a gorgeous variation on Mavis.

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/09/2022 20:17

Coincidentally I met an elderly lady called Mavis today and thought it was a lovely name due for a revival.

CambsAlways · 24/09/2022 20:22

I actually like it but it does make me think of a bulldogs name 😜

Katypp · 24/09/2022 20:23

How come Martha is regularly described as gorgeous on here but Mavis apparently isn't part of the in-crowd of names? Who decides?

ideasmirrour · 24/09/2022 20:24

What about Iris, OP?

Hairymaery · 24/09/2022 20:28

I love it!!
