Morning mums!
just looking for thoughts and opinions please. What do you think to the name Lillian? Is it too old fashioned? I love the name Lilly, and this is what the baby would be known by, but my other daughters (this will be the third girl) have longer names and so I don’t know if Lilly quite fits with them and also I know Lilly is very popular (although Ito where I live luckily as I live in a small village) so I thought Lillian was slightly different. Any other suggestions most welcome!! Thanks

I think it's lovely.

If it helps, I know a 13 year old one. Really suits her, nobody comments.

Spidey66 · 20/09/2022 09:27

I think it's sweet, as is Lily as a nickname.

HappyPeach · 20/09/2022 09:28

I hear The Archers theme tune....

Fatballs · 20/09/2022 09:28

I like it.

IggyAce · 20/09/2022 09:29

I like it I know one aged around 5/6 who goes by Lil.

casualreader2022 · 20/09/2022 09:36

I like Lillian, it's pretty.

Other options I like that shorten to Lily is,
Liliana and Lilith.

toastofthetown · 20/09/2022 09:38

I really don't see any appeal in Lillian. It's so clunky sounding. It's not that it's too old fashioned, it's just an ugly name to me. And if popularity is a concern, it doesn't matter it's so close to Lily, her name will just fade into the sea of Lilies anyway. Even if Lily isn't popular where you are, she probably won't stay in your village forever.

Hotpinkangel19 · 20/09/2022 09:50

I prefer the spelling Lily

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 20/09/2022 09:54

Lovely name. Most people will spell the diminutive Lily.

MsTSwift · 20/09/2022 09:57

She’ll be another Lily which is very very overused. If that doesn’t bother you fine but it’s really not a very “special” name any more.

Dinoteeth · 20/09/2022 09:59

I think Lillian is lovely but as you say it's likely to become Lily which is very popular just now.

What about Gillian, its similar but different to the names which seem to be popular just now.

DuchessOfSausage · 20/09/2022 10:01

I don't like it. Lily is ok but overused, but Lil puts me off it.

sunshinecoffee · 20/09/2022 10:05

I like Lillian. My daughter is called Lilianna.

Frazzled2207 · 20/09/2022 10:07

Love Lillian, was on my list but we had boys. Was my grandma’s name.

however I don’t get Lilly with two L. Looks wrong to me. The flower is a lily.

DuchessOfSausage · 20/09/2022 10:16

Lilly looks wrong.

Ladyofthelake53 · 20/09/2022 10:43

Niece is Lillian but everyone calls her lily

Purpletopaz42 · 20/09/2022 14:42

I really like Lillian, I think it's a lovely name and it's good because when she's little you can call her Lilly or Lil for short and when she's older, she can use Lillian, so it's great for any age.

Fedupmum21 · 20/09/2022 15:36

Thanks for everyone’s input, looks like it’s a pretty 50:50 split. I do like the name but I think it might just be a little bit too old fashioned.
My other daughter is called Harriet if anyone has any other name suggestions to go with it instead?

I think Lillian is nice. Reminds me of the silent movie star Lillian Gish.

Lillie Langtry was an LL too (not that it's exactly her heyday anymore!) but I'd probably stick with the Lily spelling for your daughter.

watcherintherye · 20/09/2022 16:20

I don’t think Lilian is too old fashioned, and it’s a very pretty name, imo!

Fivebeanchilli · 20/09/2022 16:21

I like it. It's hardly going to stand out as old fashioned amongst the sea of Mabels and Ediths. However the most traditional working is Lilian and I think that's the one that most people would assume. Therefore I'd for for that one as the least likely to be annoying growing up with.

Jessbow · 20/09/2022 17:05

I think Lilith goes better with Harriet.

Dougieowner · 20/09/2022 17:06

My mum was a Lillian (born 1929).

PippaWater · 20/09/2022 17:55

I love Lillian.

caitlinrose · 20/09/2022 20:38

It's fine.

I honestly prefer just Lily.

Lilly looks a bit clunky to me, sorry!

Lillian is fine but I do find it a bit bland compared to the lively Lily.

I personally don't think it's so important that their names go together. I'd just pick Lily.
