Is it too unique?

Okay guys here's the thing. My first daughter sort of chose her own name. I just knew it was meant to be her name. And I feel like that's happened now I'm pregnant with my second daughter. I really like the name but I worry it's just too different. I've done a lot of research and a lot of things say it's masculine but equally enough say gender neutral so I'm torn. The name is Elwynn and my oldest's name is Aurora. I love how the names sound together and Elwynn sounds great with our surname. Are there any names that give this vibe? ~ not Elowen because at that point I would just use Elwynn.

It's a lot better than I thought it was going to be from your thread title! Unless you live somewhere where people will constantly thinking your child is a boy until they meet her I wouldn't worry. Nothing can be "too unique" btw - it's either unique or it's not; it doesn't mean the same as unusual.

freesolo · 17/09/2022 07:26

Elwyn is a very commonly used boys name in Wales

Milknosugarta · 17/09/2022 07:29

Evelyn?

WaffleAndGelato · 17/09/2022 07:35

It's perfectly nice but feels a little flat and dull to my ears alongside Aurora which is such a big, grand sounding name. How about Elodie, Araminta or Rosalia?

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 17/09/2022 07:39

Arwen
Anwen
Eluned (El lin ed)

RoseAndRose · 17/09/2022 07:40

I thought Elwynn was a boys name.

So no, not unique at all

TabithaTittlemouse · 17/09/2022 07:41

It’s nice. Definitely not as bad as I thought it would be!

How did your first choose her name?

carefullycourageous · 17/09/2022 07:42

It isn't unique, it is a boy's name.

FurAndFeathers · 17/09/2022 07:42

I’m English and even I know that it’s a Welsh boys name.
The suffix -wyn is masculine. -Wen is the female equivalent

Do you have any Welsh connections?

honestly it will make you look a bit ignorant and is basically the equivalent of calling your DD Hamish or Fraser

Titsflyingsouth · 17/09/2022 07:43

The only Elwyn I've ever known was male. Elowen is far nicer imo....

KnickerlessParsons · 17/09/2022 07:44

If you're going to use it, you only need the one N. Why would you use two? What purpose does the extra N serve?

If you don't mind giving your daughter a male Welsh name (assume you're not Welsh), then go for it. It's a nice name.

But it's not at all unique if that's what you're after.

RudsyFarmer · 17/09/2022 07:45

Evelyn is a beautiful name. Eve/Evie for short. Go that route.

CatsAreCrackers · 17/09/2022 07:45

I have to admit to not having heard of it before, so didn't know it was more of a boys name. I like to sound of Aurora and Elwynn together. I think though the last N will be missed a lot and she'll probably be Ellie or Winnie at school. So it depends if those things would annoy you.

ElizabethBest · 17/09/2022 07:46

Are you Welsh? Just so you know, that’s not how it’s spelled, and it’s a male name normally. I’m not sure that it goes with Aurora, tbh.

SandieCollins · 17/09/2022 07:47

How does a baby choose their own name? I’m intrigued

QuebecBagnet · 17/09/2022 07:48

Definitely a boys name. I mean I know a girl called Timmie (not a nickname) so guess you could call her a boys name.

Anon778833 · 17/09/2022 07:49

Can’t you have Alwen or Anwen which are girls names?

QuebecBagnet · 17/09/2022 07:49

How about Branwen?

mummabubs · 17/09/2022 07:50

I live in Wales and love welsh names, as someone else said - it's a well-known boys name here with one 'n'. 'wyn' names are male and 'wen' is female. We went with a very quirky name for our son (as in only 13 of that name registered in the UK that year kind of quirky) but it is a well-known male name in another country. So in relation to your OP the quirkiness wouldn't bother me at all but the giving an established boys name to a girl would be a trickier one for me to reason out. As others have said, over here it would be a bit like calling your daughter Robert or David.

seven201 · 17/09/2022 07:50

There's a boy Elwyn in my daughters class. I have a friend with a girl toddler Elowen. To me one is a male name, the other a female name, so I don't understand why you say you'd not use Elowen (fair enough if you just like the name though).

Evelyn. Arwen.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 17/09/2022 07:52

Elwyn is lovely for a boy.

JaninaDuszejko · 17/09/2022 07:54

Maybe your unborn child is telling you he's a boy.

Never heard of the name before but as a side note its not uncommon to use what people class as a boys name for a girl and vice versa. Maybe you could start a new trend. Anyhow I think it's lovely and it's your child as long as its not a name that they will be bullied for then there's nothing wrong with it.

cyclamenqueen · 17/09/2022 07:59

Boys name , David Cameron’s son is called Elwyn, not sure why that’s relevant , just remember the press coverage .
