Is it too unique?

Okay guys here's the thing. My first daughter sort of chose her own name. I just knew it was meant to be her name. And I feel like that's happened now I'm pregnant with my second daughter. I really like the name but I worry it's just too different. I've done a lot of research and a lot of things say it's masculine but equally enough say gender neutral so I'm torn. The name is Elwynn and my oldest's name is Aurora. I love how the names sound together and Elwynn sounds great with our surname. Are there any names that give this vibe? ~ not Elowen because at that point I would just use Elwynn.

It's pretty. It goes nicely with Aurora because they both make me think of fairy tales and Elwynn makes me think of elves.

The only Elwin I know of is a guy but don't let it bother you.

Similar names: Arwen, Anwen, Éowyn, Eilonwy, Aeronwy, Morwenna, Evelyn.

youarntaguest · 17/09/2022 11:19

Your first child said she wanted to be called Aurora Wow clever

AliBaliBears · 17/09/2022 11:36

It's a Welsh boys name, not unique at all.

I like Gwenan and Gwynne if you're after a Welsh girls name.

Otherwise Eleanor, Emeline, Rowan, Ellis?

Billylilly · 17/09/2022 11:54

Regardless of whether it is a girls or boys name, I just don't think it works with Aurora.

I feel Aurora is a strong, almost mystical or magical name, and Elwyn doesn't match it. I did a quick Google (not sure why I am so invested in this lol!) and this website (link below) has some beautiful and interesting names which I think live up to Aurora.

Eirwen - Eira is snow and Wen is white. I've ways thought of it as Snow White which works with Aurora. (Think the actual meaning is blessed snow)

That's a lovely suggestion.

Kite22 · 17/09/2022 11:59

Something can't be "too unique".
Unique literally means the only one - you can't have a relative measure of uniqueness.

Then 'wyn' at the end of a name indicates it is for a male. If you want to use Welsh names - and why not there are some lovely names out there - you need a 'wen' ending if your baby is a girl.

So, as you are asking our opinion, then mine is, 'think again'

KirstenBlest · 17/09/2022 12:57

It's a boy's name and used in Wales but the origin isn't welsh.
Elwen would make it less masculine

France98 · 17/09/2022 13:00

Arden would go nicely

kaezarose · 17/09/2022 16:19

I'm seeing unique is maybe the wrong choice of words here lol. Honestly I had no idea this was such a popular Welch name, but definitely in the US I had never heard it used. My mom said she saw one female Elwyn on the news. I know I can't argue with it being a real name in another country but I just can't see it as a masculine name. It definitely sounds girly to me. The extra N really serves no purpose except for something sentimental between my husband and I. But I'm definitely not opposed to Elwen if that's more feminine. But I know I know, you're all wondering how the babies are choosing! Lol. It's been this way for everything my whole life, pets, stuffed animals even. I look at thousands of names make lists but nothing seems right until just one day a name gets thrown at me and I can't think of anything else. With Aurora I never thought I'd use that name. But my husband suggested it one day, first I was opposed but then I just would start talking to my belly (maybe that's not weird) and I would say hey Aurora and things of the like. When I suggested El(whatever ending we decide) he's not stopped calling this baby Elwyn. It just feels right. However some of your other suggestions are lovely! Thank you all I enjoyed reading this this morning

Maybe your unborn child is telling you he's a boy.

That would actually be pretty funny because I thought the it was a boy the whole first part of my pregnancy lol. Boy name would have been Rowan

Don't worry about what anyone else thinks OP.

Elwynn sounds great.

Elwynn sounds great.

Do take it into account, though -before you decide.

Algor1thm · 17/09/2022 19:50

-wyn is a male ending and -wen is a female ending. Elwen? You could pronounce it the same way.

I like Arianwen which has a similar feel.

WashableVelvet · 17/09/2022 20:05

Elwen fine, even Elwenn if you need to. I love Elowen more though.
Guinevere if you like that ‘win’ sound? Majestic and mythical too.

Rowan is pretty unisex here (U.K.). Also Rowenna. Lowenna also nice. Or go full Tolkien with Eowyn, which is a fictional woman’s name not a Welsh man’s name.

pimlicoanna · 17/09/2022 20:08

I also thought that was a boys name

wellingtonsandwaffles · 17/09/2022 20:22

Heulwen is a Welsh female name meaning “sunshine” - pronounced very similarly. Could that work? It is very Welsh though if you don’t have welsh connections!

7Worfs · 17/09/2022 20:28

The second n is for sentimental reasons? Did you meet your DH in Elwynn Forest? 🤓

SandieCollins · 17/09/2022 09:34

I’m only on the thread to find this out

Me too 🤣
Choosing a name that you like is just what most parents do.

Myotherdogsaballboy · 17/09/2022 23:32

I was going to suggest Olwen as an alternative but I’ve been beaten to it. Or Aeris or Aeryn perhaps?

Saisong · 17/09/2022 23:34

Just use Rowan, I know a female one. Goes well with Aurora.

NuffSaidSam · 17/09/2022 23:39

Rowan is unisex, so just use that. It's a lovely name.

Aretheyhavingalaugh · 17/09/2022 23:55

I think you should just go with the name you like, regardless of if others say its a boys name etc. When I was pregnant with my son, we had a name we liked, that had personal meaning to us, that went well with our surname, but was very unique and everyone, I mean everyone had an opinion and expressed thier distaste! Do you know what we did? We called him the name we liked and people have had to get used to it!

groovergirl · 18/09/2022 02:15

I know a female Elwyn in her 50s. She has had problems all her adult life with people assuming she was male, so hyphenated her very girly middle name to her first name. Yet she still has problems. And she's not in Wales!

Please, OP, just don't do it. The Welsh nomenclature has so many lovely girls' names that you don't need to rummage in the boys' list. Elowen is so close to Elwyn; why not use it? How about Rhiannon, Briallan, Lowri, Morgana, Gweneth, Sabrina?

Cornish has some good ones, too: Morwenna, Demelza, Kerensa, Tregereth.

BadTimesAtTheElRoyale · 18/09/2022 02:53

Elwyn is a male name if you wish to make up a female equivalent then go for Elwen. No double n at the end in the Welsh language

MissingNashville · 18/09/2022 03:04

With Aurora I never thought I'd use that name. But my husband suggested it one day

So your husband chose it, not your baby. 😂 That’s a pretty normal way of choosing a name. 😬
