Is it too unique?

Okay guys here's the thing. My first daughter sort of chose her own name. I just knew it was meant to be her name. And I feel like that's happened now I'm pregnant with my second daughter. I really like the name but I worry it's just too different. I've done a lot of research and a lot of things say it's masculine but equally enough say gender neutral so I'm torn. The name is Elwynn and my oldest's name is Aurora. I love how the names sound together and Elwynn sounds great with our surname. Are there any names that give this vibe? ~ not Elowen because at that point I would just use Elwynn.

Maybe your unborn child is telling you he's a boy.

😂

As another pp said- Elodie is nice

welshpolarbear · 17/09/2022 08:01

Sorry op.Elwyn is an old mans Welsh name. (No idea if it's making a comeback).

My Nain was Eirwen, how about that? I think it sounds a lot more feminine.

OctopusBreath · 17/09/2022 08:04

I'm sorry OP, but I'm Welsh and this thread has me giggling and imagining the reaction if she ever came to Wales or met someone Welsh, and introduced herself as Elwynn. You can't give your daughter a name with a -wyn suffix, it's not one of those things that can be made unisex. Plus, it tends to be of a certain generation here, so it would be like calling your beautiful little girl Gary or Clive.
Remember that risking a name like this isn't really YOUR risk... She's the one that will have to live with it, and she's the one that will have to face the comments.

welshpolarbear · 17/09/2022 08:05

Eirwen - Eira is snow and Wen is white. I've ways thought of it as Snow White which works with Aurora. (Think the actual meaning is blessed snow)

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 17/09/2022 08:06

I don't think you should give your daughter a boy's name when you could easily change it to elowen and have the same sound (in an English accent anyway)

Snugglemonkey · 17/09/2022 08:06

You will look very ignorant to Welsh people, which wouldn't be something I would be comfortable attaching to a child.

OldWivesTale · 17/09/2022 08:09

I know plenty of Elwyns but they are male and Welsh

Smilingwithfangs · 17/09/2022 08:11

It’s unique in that it is a male name given to a girl and an extra condiment added in for originality which will like just add to her irritation. I can see it sounds sweet and pretty but I think it will cause her angst in the future

Elodie
Elinor
Evelyn
Esma
Evangeline
Erica
Emberlee
Everleigh
Eliana

so many other choices

We all guide our children when they are making foolish choices- maybe this is a situation where you need to guide your unborn from making the wrong decision!

Aurora & Willow

Aurora & Elle

BloodyCamping · 17/09/2022 08:13

Aurora & Elvie

It's perfectly nice but feels a little flat and dull to my ears alongside Aurora which is such a big, grand sounding name. How about Elodie, Araminta or Rosalia?

Where did Araminta and Rosalia come from? They’re not remotely close to what the OP suggested 🤔

AdInfinitum12 · 17/09/2022 08:30

It's a real name, so not very unique. It's also the equivalent of calling your daughter John or David or something. It's a boy's name.

GreenClock · 17/09/2022 08:31

I’m not from Wales but I’ve been on this board long enough to know about -wyn and -wen. I reckon you need a rethink, OP. The masculine name with the random N would be an odd choice for a baby girl. I see why you like the sound of it though, and I’d be all for Elwyn for a boy.

JackandSam · 17/09/2022 08:38

Lots of girls have boys names- Riley, Finley, Jamie etc. Lots of girls names started out as boys names - Hazel, Alexis, Lesley. And lots of girls names are feminised versions of boys names - Olivia, Alexandra, Petra.

So use it OP. It's definitely a name.

Better than my neighbours twins - Bertie and Albert. Seriously.

cariadlet · 17/09/2022 08:41

My (Welsh) Dad was called Elwyn. I've never heard of it being used as a girl's name and never seen the spelling Elwynn.

Olwyn is a girl's name.

Olwyn is a girl's name.

Typo: Olwen is a girl's name.

And I'd forgotten Bronwen, which I think sounds nicer. Should have remembered because one of my cousins is called Bronwen.

Mumoftwoinprimary · 17/09/2022 08:47

How about Olwen. That was / is my godmother’s name.

WildfellAnne · 17/09/2022 08:50

Yes, use Olwen, definitely not Elwynn.

Brideandpredjudice · 17/09/2022 08:58

I just wanted to enquire why the double n?

Luredbyapomegranate · 17/09/2022 09:00

I like it - but I think it’s right that Welsh male names end wyn and female wen

So you might at least want to make it Elwen , I prefer Arwen or Olwen, and just Gwen is nice too. Elowen also good.

jrt2022 · 17/09/2022 09:04

It's a boy's name. It's not fair to have an Aurora - a pretty, girly girl name - for one child... and then a boy's name for the second! I'd feel sorry for the child with the boy's name.

Why NOT Elowen? It's beautiful and goes perfectly with Aurora, has the same whimsical feminine feel. It's much nicer than Elwynn in my opinion and has the advantage of actually being a girl's name!

whatausername · 17/09/2022 09:10

It will sound like you wished you had had a boy instead of girl.

FredrikaPeri · 17/09/2022 09:20

How did she "choose her own name" op?

How did she "choose her own name" op?

I’m only on the thread to find this out

Babdoc · 17/09/2022 09:39

OP, you clearly don’t understand the meaning of “unique”. It is an absolute, not a relative, term.
Nothing can be too unique, a bit unique, or very unique - it is either unique or it is not.
Unique means “the only one of its kind”.
