Is it too unique?

Okay guys here's the thing. My first daughter sort of chose her own name. I just knew it was meant to be her name. And I feel like that's happened now I'm pregnant with my second daughter. I really like the name but I worry it's just too different. I've done a lot of research and a lot of things say it's masculine but equally enough say gender neutral so I'm torn. The name is Elwynn and my oldest's name is Aurora. I love how the names sound together and Elwynn sounds great with our surname. Are there any names that give this vibe? ~ not Elowen because at that point I would just use Elwynn.

Eirwen - Eira is snow and Wen is white. I've ways thought of it as Snow White which works with Aurora. (Think the actual meaning is blessed snow)

That’s lovely!

I lived in Aus for many years and all of the Bronwyns I knew were female. Didn't meet a single male Bronwyn, or female Bronwen.

So if the OP is in the US and there isn't a big population of people from the UK there, the wyn/wen distinction may not be at all relevant in day to day life.

In any event, loads of traditional male names have become unisex names.

I really don't think it's an issue OP. If you like it, go for it.

The second n is for sentimental reasons? Did you meet your DH in Elwynn Forest? 🤓

You are awesome haha, Not that we met there particularly but wanted to make a nod to the game without using Jaina

It's not too unique and not unusual, it's a good name for your daughter.

That would actually be pretty funny because I thought the it was a boy the whole first part of my pregnancy lol. Boy name would have been Rowan

I have a girl named Rowan…. So could still be an option.

I don’t think in Wales there is a Welsh equivalent of Bronwen. I certainly never met a male Bronwyn when I lived in Wales. People may well misspell Bronwen as Bronwyn and that has become popular (outside Wales) as a girl’s name. But that’s different to actually giving a girl a well known male name.

Elwynne · 18/09/2022 06:40

Well obviously with my name I have to say go for it!! But all the other Elwyn's and Dutch Elwin's ive met have been male.

It isn't a common name though so I don't think most people have a gender idea.

Congratulations!

This is a lovely alternative.

Also, Aurora is such a fem

NighghtmareNeighbour · 18/09/2022 06:44

Olwen maybe

I posted too soon. Aurora is a very feminine name which means that unisex names for girls don't really work as a sibset. (You'd assume the one with a unisex name is a boy).

Think Eirwen works well with Aurora.

-wyn is a male ending and -wen is a female ending. Elwen? You could pronounce it the same way.

I like Arianwen which has a similar feel.

My little girls name. She is Welsh and hers is spelt Ariannwenn

Lunabun · 18/09/2022 07:20

Definitely a boys name, sorry OP! X

Anon778833 · 18/09/2022 08:34

Ariannwenn is lovely.

Nice! I met DH on WoW in 2009, we have 2 DC now and they have ordinary names! I wish I thought of it to give them at least middle names related to the game, like Wrynn.
What about Alleria for your girl (with or without Windrunner) 🧝‍♀️

KirstenBlest · 18/09/2022 12:37

@Seeleyboo , why the extra Ns?
Arianwen is the usual spelling.

I've honestly considered Alleria but I don't know if I want both girls to have A names. It's definitely a tough decision! Honestly Wrynn is so nice as well. So amazing how people meet on WoW, my mom actually met her now husband around 13 years ago in Westfall

Eirlys, if you're going the Welsh route? Means snowdrop.

puddingandsun · 18/09/2022 21:08

Morwenna will go really well with Aurora imo.

KirstenBlest · 19/09/2022 09:46

JaninaDuszejko · 17/09/2022 11:58

That's a lovely suggestion.

It's very dated, and definitely grannyish, and the Eir part is not easy to say if you dont speat Welsh. it's the name of someone who is about 85 years old.

Eirlys is also dated and again the Eir bit is tricky.

KirstenBlest · 19/09/2022 09:46

Morwenna isn't Welsh, it's Cornish

LightHousePanda · 19/09/2022 19:14

I'm not Welsh but I think it's important to respect the rules if you're going to use a Welsh name. So I'd stick to the -wen ending for a girl. I think it's less important to follow trends in Wales. If you live in the US then I don't think it matters that in Wales your chosen name sounds like an "old lady name".

KirstenBlest · 20/09/2022 12:42

@LightHousePanda , I agree about the -wen bit. My comment about the names being grannyish was possibly misleading.
Would you even know how to say Eirwen or Eirlys? If you heard someone Welsh say the name, would you know how to spell it?
FWIW, Ms Paltrow's name is that of someone 30 yrs her senior, and every article I've read about her, her name gets misspelt as Gywneth,
