Unusual but not wacky Girls names

Trying to think of some more girls names to add to my list as currently DP and I only agree on two names (Cleo and Jemima). For my first DD I feel as though I was quite successful in finding a name that was uncommon but not outlandish, but struggling more for this baby. Basically I don’t want anything where there’s going to be 5 of them in the class with the same name. Any ideas?

Jemima is very racially charged in the USA

Can I ask why? I didn't know this.

I associate it with Puddleduck or Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!

Mummysharkargggggggg · 14/09/2022 18:20

There's no other girls with my daughters name in her school 👍🏻
But 5 dogs now share her name on our street 👎🏻🤷‍♀️🤣

Jemima is very racially charged in the USA

Can I ask why? I didn't know this.

I was working in a country close to the US when I was pregnant, and when I said to my mainly black female colleagues that I was considering Jemima, they advised me against it as it was still associated with slavery. Since I heard this from several different groups, I reluctantly discarded it.

AdoraLovesCake · 14/09/2022 18:29

What about Cora, that's my name

TheVanguardSix · 14/09/2022 18:30

If I had another daughter, my shortlist would be:
Tallulah
Anaïs
Samantha
Pearl
Manon
Tabitha
Jemima
Anouk or Anoushka
Annika
Tamsin
Keziah
Ramona
Gloria

A rather long shortlist!

FKATondelayo · 14/09/2022 18:36

Aunt Jemima is a racial stereotype similar to Uncle Tom - although that association hasn't really hurt the latter's popularity. I wouldn't think it worth worrying about unless you're planning to emigrate to South Carolina.

I only have boys but would have loved to use:
Elodie
Margot / Margaret
Tess
Mary
Antonia
Jill

I love this list and my name is on it - NO baby girls were named it in 2020 so definitely unusual.

HelenaJustina · 14/09/2022 18:42

All 4 of my daughters names appear in this thread. Some great ideas here!

Huntswomanonthemove · 14/09/2022 18:48

Cleo
Saskia
Arabella
Elenora
Henrietta
Juliana
Miriam
Rosamund

The suggestions have been absolutely fantastic - exactly what I was looking for! Some truly beautiful names, many I hadn't considered before. Thank you so much ☺️

What a great thread! Lots of beautiful and interesting ideas on here - makes a real change from the usual 9 or 10 names I keep hearing everywhere irl.

Lots of my favourites have already been mentioned, but I like:

Marina
Frida
Greta
Flora
Vita
Aster
Aphra
Briar
Blythe
Sorrel
Tansy
Gaia
Cora

A few names to avoid if you don’t want super common/trendy (DD is just starting Reception and these are the multiples in her year group/nursery):

Isla
Olivia
Eva/Evie
Myla/Mila
Lyla/Lila
Ava
Aria/Arya
Luna
Millie/Tilly and variations thereof (Matilda; Amelia etc)
