Is Tamar a girl's name? I just thought it was a river.

nothing in cornwall is 'just a river' or 'just a place name' - there are loads of people across the UK named after cornish place names but then many cornish place names are named after people so it all works out in the end. Tamar is one of them btw, not sure if it is for a girl or boy, these days it doesn't seem to matter anyway

Hugely relieved you've thought again on this one - I 'know' the Wind in the Willows character and it comes across really well there - but in 2008 - sorry no!

We always produce girls here - but I would have liked Orlando for a boy - maybe it's as well I've only got girls!

Ellbell · 22/01/2008 23:28

A google search turns up only female Tamars.

controlfreakygobshite · 22/01/2008 23:31

also a jewish girls name...

coby · 22/01/2008 23:32

I shall check the river's 'bits' when I go over it tomorrow (although logically thinking I need to be a little further south for proper confirmation )

I once worked with someone called Isaac & decided - too late, regrettably - that it would have been a really good name for ds - and it means "laughter", I think. This Isaac was actually known as Mick, though, which I thought was a bit of a comedown!

If you did want a Cornish name, there are hundreds of really exotic ones, especially the names of places/churches/saints, and I'm sure there'd be something interesting but not too weird/potentially embarrassing.

I must say, I'm certainly with the others on Portl(e)y, which has to have 11 out of 10.

10 - purely on the basis it isn't a real name.

nappyaddict · 23/01/2008 01:00

btw did you mean ephraim? i only ask cos my ex's surname is ephraims and wondered if you had mispelled it cos pretty sure ephram isn't a name but i do no ephraim is a first name aswell as a surname.

Isiah might be a nice alternative to isaac?

coby · 23/01/2008 10:00

NappyAddict - No I meant Ephram. It appears to have three spellings Ephram, Ephrem and Ephraim. I prefer Ephram but looks unlikely for us. 'tis Jewish and I know a proper Jewish Ephram so if spelling is right for them it is fine for me too .

overthehill don't want a Cornish name for DS. It's bad enough living down here and having to carry a large bell around and shout 'OUTSIDER' as I walk down the street without having the locals lynch us for 'stealing' one of their names (as well as their jobs, houses, etc). Nah they're not all that bad really .

krippledkerrymum I should be

Buda · 23/01/2008 15:12

Just in case you wanted any further clarification - 100!

I love the Isaac though. I know 2 of them and also 2 Zacharys known as Zac.

I knew a Monty years ago. He was gorgeous!

AnAngelWithin · 23/01/2008 15:14

100 sorry. awful name.

harpsichordcarrier · 23/01/2008 15:16

I am just PMSL at the idea of calling a child Portley
honestly, that has really cheered me up

LoveAngel · 23/01/2008 15:17

Portley? Off the richter in it's awfulness.

Boco · 23/01/2008 15:17

I think you should go science fiction and have Portkey instead.

bundle · 23/01/2008 15:18

I think it's a baaad idea
