back to the drawing board my dear! i see where youre going with the whole surnames-asfirst-names type sounding sort of distinguished and all that... but portley (portly) just means plump!

katierocket · 22/01/2008 21:49

LOL SD

Isaac is lovely

seeker · 22/01/2008 21:50

There isn't a Dylan among the 200 at ds's school either They are all called Connor, Callum, Ryan or Josh!

coby · 22/01/2008 21:50

3 other Isaacs at nursery and I keep hearing it in shops. It's driving me mad (I blame pregnancy hormones).

Maybe I just imagine it but it's always the children whose mum overuse their childs name who seem to have chosen Issac.

Typical overheard conversation 'Isaac, come and look at this Isaac. Look Isaac it's a dinosaur, what sort of dinosaur is it Isaac, do you know Isaac? Thats right, well done Isaac'. Argghhhhhh!

I guess I am just tuned into the name after 20 years plus I am hormonal and agressive

that said - DD1 is Emily, I chose it when I was 4 and no way was I ever going to have a different name for her. It suits her very well, she loves it and I call her Emi. She'e beautiful - see profile pics

lol at Portly. Pretty much unanimous that. Bet that made your decision making easier.

I like Isaac. Sounds lovely and I do not know one single Isaac. If you have loved it for years, then now is the time to use it!

3andnomore · 22/01/2008 21:51

Isaac is not that common and a lovely name

pooka · 22/01/2008 21:52

I haven't met a single Isaac round here (se London) - not of dd's age (4.5) nor of ds's age (2). Not one.
Of your list, I like Isaac. Quite like monty too, but it does make me think of a mole for some reason.

Chuffinnora · 22/01/2008 21:52

I love Issac. I wanted to name DS Issac but DH didn't feel the love and we chose another name beginning with I instead.
180 boys in my kids school and not an Issac among them. It's not overdone. Just quietly classic I think.

Dottydot · 22/01/2008 21:53

Coby - you'll just be tuning into it at the moment - honestly I'm sure there aren't millions of Isaacs around. Keep it on your list and see if you can agree on one or two more, in case he doesn't look like an Isaac.

dp and I agreed that if ds2 came out blonde he'd be a Harry but if he came out with dark hair he'd be a Dylan. The first thing we saw was this HUGE mop of jet black hair..!

kindersurprise · 22/01/2008 21:53

Emily and Isaac

Go well together. What about your other DD?

Lovely girls

pankhurst · 22/01/2008 21:54

agree with isaac - great name.

like moses, noah, possibly not Ham, don't know about Shem?, Japhet? Abraham? Caspar? Melchior? BALTHAZAR...!!!!!

call him Balthazar!

not Ephraim - diaphragm????

Or a name that sounds good with mohammed?

in ten years time, isaac will be surounded by mohammeds.

controlfreakygobshite · 22/01/2008 21:54

... and my names coby?

coby · 22/01/2008 21:56

moby?

Spidermama · 22/01/2008 21:58

Heath as in Heath Ledger (who has sadly just died aged 28 according to another thread.

Great name though. Along the lines of River, Fox and Leaf.

seeker · 22/01/2008 21:59

Emily and Isaac sound fab together!

RosaLuxOnTheBrightSideOfLife · 22/01/2008 22:00

I think Isaac's a Cornish thing Coby. There are none around where I live which is only a matter of 10 miles or so north of you!
Lots of Toms, Bens, Jacks (at least three per class) Bradleys, Brooklyns, Connors.
My girls are always aghast when I tell them what my boy names were!

coby · 22/01/2008 22:00

controlfreakygobshite DH ruled them all out immediately -sorry.

Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin were heroes of mine when I was younger for me the Isaac comes from him not the bible (although Mr Newton was an anally retentive sod, I didn't discover this until I was about 25, by which time I didn't care - Isaac was my boy's name by that time!)

isambard? same sort of great man vibe!

LyraSilvertongue · 22/01/2008 22:04

If you liked Portley, what about Porter instead?

coby · 22/01/2008 22:04

Heath Ledger has died????

Rosalux - are you really?? Not too many on your list at my nursery (which is across the border in Devon)

RosaLuxOnTheBrightSideOfLife · 22/01/2008 22:05

I'm in Barnstaple, Coby.

RosaLuxOnTheBrightSideOfLife · 22/01/2008 22:06

Oh, I second Isambard. Or Brunel is quite nice.

Fennel · 22/01/2008 22:06

Isaac is lovely, though I know several (mostly in Manchester). I like Monty too, I know a little Montgomery called Monty.

coby · 22/01/2008 22:06

Isambard kingdom brunel - my hubby's hero (fellow engineer). I don't know the correct spelling so could not use it (not going to look it up either )
