'Unisex' names - too boyish?

thede · 28/08/2022 19:52

These are all names declared 'unisex' that I do love for girls, but they're all more commonly associated with boys (IMO).
Which of these - if any - would you say are acceptable to use on a girl at this point/which do you like (again, if any?)
Or do you know any girls with these names now?
I love them but feel I may be in a minority? Blush

Alex
Blake
Bodhi
Eddie
Evan
Finley
Frankie
Joey
Lennox
Logan
Luca
Noa
Perry
Quinn
Stevie
Tate

The first is a brilliant name. Everyone knows it and Alexandra/ Sasha/ Lexie are nicely different from each other if she grows into one.

MarmaRell78 · 28/08/2022 19:55

Alex
Blake

Eddie

Frankie
Joey - but maybe not spelt like that?

Noa

Quinn
Stevie

YourLipsMyLipsApocalypse · 28/08/2022 19:55

I love Stevie.

Also Davey, and I recently met my first female Felix, which I thought really suited her.

Skelligsfeathers · 28/08/2022 19:56

Alex is the only one suitable for a girl imo

thede · 28/08/2022 19:58

@YourLipsMyLipsApocalypse I love Davey for a girl too! I was actually thinking about that today.

90% of that list isn't even unisex

They're just boys names

BuenoSucia · 28/08/2022 19:59

Stevie Nicks - famous for her penis.

BuffaloCauliflower · 28/08/2022 20:00

Alex - fine
Blake - just about ok
Bodhi - nope
Eddie - as a nickname for Edith maybe but needs the full name
Evan - no
Finley - definite no
Frankie - fine
Joey - no
Lennox - just about ok, but ideally not
Logan - definitely no
Luca - no
Noa - fine, spelt this way it is a girls name
Perry - ok if you spell it Perrie
Quinn - fine for a girl
Stevie - probably needs to be short for Stephanie
Tate - definitely no

LadyKenya · 28/08/2022 20:01

Most of the names on the list are boys names.

MarmaRell78 · 28/08/2022 20:04

I do think a lot are boys names altho some would have been nicknames for longer girls names.

This reminds me of a thread a while ago where parents of boys were complaining that lots of boys names are becoming unisex, which then made them girls names because parents of boys didn't necessarily want to give them feminine names. I think they were calling for parents of girls to leave some for the boys

caringcarer · 28/08/2022 20:04

Lynne
Chris
Taylor
Beverley

Mymoneydontjigglejiggle · 28/08/2022 20:07

Alex yes, easily. I have lots of female friends called Alex.
Blake works too. I immediately think of Blake Lively who is very feminine and glamorous.
Frankie - I've taught a fair few Frankies, all of them called Francesca but shorten it.
Noa - I actually really like this for a girl and I think it's going to become more widely used as I've heard lots of people mention it recently in baby groups and the like.
Lennox and Quinn - honestly if I just saw these names I wouldn't know if they were boys or girls. My only thought is they sound quite American but that's not a bad thing.
The others I think are very boyish.

drinkallthecoffee · 28/08/2022 20:07

Alex - I'd prefer this as a nickname for Alexandra or any of the other Alex names

Blake - Blake Lively makes this acceptable!

Bodhi - I see this one as a boys name

Eddie - I know and Edwina who goes by Eddie

Evan - I prefer this on a boy

Finley - I know a female Finlay, she was a horrible bully!

Frankie - perfectly fine

Joey - fine

Lennox - I love this on a girl, see also Lennon

Logan - prefer this on a boy

Luca - I can see this on a girl but prefer it as a boys name

Noa - love this on a girl

Perry - prefer spellings Peri/Perrie

Quinn - perfect on a girl

Stevie - super funky on a girl, love it

Tate - also funky, I know an adult female Tatum that's often called Tate.

To add to the list, I've worked with a female Ashton.

@YourLipsMyLipsApocalypse I love Davey for a girl too! I was actually thinking about that today.

I only didn't use it because my husband is Dave and I don't like kids being named after their parents.

I should have married someone else 😆

CoolerThanIceCream · 28/08/2022 20:11

Logan?????

I have an American friend with two girls called Bryce and Elliott (nn Ellie).

I have a Swedish friend with a daughter called Emory, if you want a few more names thrown into the mix.

I’m not a fan of virtually any of the names on the original list (except Alex, and maybe Stevie as a nn). And I’m not really a fan of boys’ names for girls. But these names ^^ of friends’ girls are, IMO, nicer.

thede · 28/08/2022 20:13

@CoolerThanIceCream I LOVE Elliott for a girl actually - since Scrubs was on TV! Grin

I honestly think you can call a girl any of those. Maybe Lennox/Logan/Luca might get initial reactions but people get used to things quickly.

I’ve known an Alex, Eddie, Frankie, Joey, and I was at uni with a girl called Stevie - she really suited it, never crossed anyone’s mind that it was a boys’ name, but then we were all Fleetwood Mac obsessed!

I was also at college with the girliest girl you can imagine who was called Bob. Robyn, but introduced herself on day one as Bob.

Luredbyapomegranate · 28/08/2022 22:43

Alex - yes - I’d spell it Alix as a full name for a girl, but prefer short for Alexis-Alexandra
Blake NO - Brooke instead?
Bodhi NO (just NO for anyone)
Eddie - yes if short for Edwina

Evan NO - Arwen / Olwen instead?
Finley NO - Fenn or Ffion instead?
Frankie - yes, but only if short for Francesca / Frances
Joey - I think you are better with Josie, and better again if short for Joan / Joanna /,Josephine (Joey is still an insult)
Lennox NO - Leonie instead?
Logan NO Laurel instead?
Luca - No - you might have got away with this before it got popular - Lucia instead?
Noa - yes - getting popular though
Perry - yes -.it’s a bit blah but fine
Quinn - NO too close to Quim
Stevie - I really like it but needs to be short for Stephanie / Stephania
Tate - NO for anyone. Teagan?

Brooke
Liv
Arran
Robin
Roslyn
Xenia
Aster
Astra
Hera
Oona
Mirren
Lois
Carys

might be others

KosherDill · 29/08/2022 02:29

Frankie and the like are nicknames.

Please, think of the grown woman she will be, not the cute toddler.

twomumsonebump · 29/08/2022 02:38

My DD is Lennox! I've found people either absolutely love it because it's different or they're taken aback by it and go "Oh!".

As for the rest of your list, I love Stevie (was also on our list), Noa (though is becoming more popular), Quinn and Finley!!

SequinsandStilettos · 29/08/2022 02:40

Alexandra nn Alex
Prefer Edie to Eddie
Joey ok but still a bit Dawson's creek, prefer Joely
Quinn reminds me of Glee, but fine
Stevie I like, but I love Stevie Nicks so

I also like Hayden, Cameron and Mackenzie

Rest on your list are not my cup of Brew and would prefer surnames of not using Alex, Quinn, Stevie or 3 above

I have taught a Frankie. She was a pain in the butt!

Confusion101 · 29/08/2022 02:42

I've come across Alex, Blake, Evan, Frankie, Lennox, Logan, Noa and Quinn as both Boys and girls. Love Blake, Frankie, and Quinn. Also love Dani, Billie and Andi

SequinsandStilettos · 29/08/2022 02:45

if not of

SequinsandStilettos · 29/08/2022 02:47

I like Devi - big never have I ever fan! (Her frenemy calls her David, mind!)

Newuser82 · 29/08/2022 02:48

I actually really like them all! I think they would work !
