This is a greek name I love but I am not keen on the nick names Ria, Ella, or Ellie. Can you think of any cute nick names?

OP posts:

I fear that Ellie, Ella, Ria, Ritsa are the usual nicknames for Eleftheria. How about "Thalia" as an alternative name though (stress in a) ? One of the 9 Muses with a sort of similar "vibe" to Eleftheria but obviously not the same meaning/connotations.

All that comes to me when I see/read it is diphtheria 🙈🙉

I see it as 'elephant' so Nellie for a nick name. Sorry.🤐

SirChenjins · 23/08/2022 15:38

I’d just go for nn ‘one-sixteenth’ to reflect her Greek heritage. Or tenuous.

inmyslippers · 23/08/2022 15:40

I think it's a lovely name op.

DillonPanthersTexas · 23/08/2022 15:50

With all due respect, her nickname will be determined at school where she will end up with 'Elf on a Shelf', 'Nellie' or some pathogen related jibe.

flapjackfairy · 23/08/2022 15:53

sorry to be thick but how do you pronounce it ?

goldfinchonthelawn · 23/08/2022 15:53

I knew a Greek Elfi - that's pretty.
Elfi
Effie
Thea
Tia
Terri

all work.

Luredbyapomegranate · 24/08/2022 03:27

Elfie or Thera

It does make me think Diphtheria though. Have you thought about Athena?

sashh · 24/08/2022 06:18

Elf.

itsgettingweird · 24/08/2022 06:19

Effie was my first thought too

Sorry, but is it not Eleutheria? Meaning liberty?

Eleftheria = Modern Greek
Eleutheria = Ancient Greek

Do you have any English- or Spanish-speaking great grandparents who would justify just naming her Ria? That's a word that already exists in English, and a beautiful name that wouldn't cause her half as much annoyance as she goes through life.

If you go for “Ria” though it’s really important to consider the middle name and last name to check it flows well.

How about Perspicacious?

gunnersgold · 24/08/2022 06:31

What about ettie as short for liberty

carefullycourageous · 24/08/2022 06:32

This is the first word that came to my mind too!

Eleftheria is not a nice looking or sounding name, sorry OP..

Whataretheodds · 24/08/2022 06:52

OP lives in Greece so noone is going to call her Nellie the Elephant at school.

OP, do you need a nickname? Thea, Theri, Effie, Leffy?

No she doesn't - she lived in Greece for a while.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 24/08/2022 08:18

Tilly

Snoopsnoggysnog · 24/08/2022 08:48

I think that name is tricky if you live in the UK, I also see elephant and diphtheria, sorry.

what about Athena, Thalia, Effie, Thea, Thera which are all lovely

QueenJulian · 24/08/2022 08:58

It means freedom, doesn’t it? Effie and Thea are the most Greek diminutives, I think. Rhea or Tia?

flapjackfairy · 23/08/2022 15:53

Exactly what I was thinking, and if I can't even work out how you say it, how on earth is a child going to learn how to flipping spell it?!

pinklavenders · 24/08/2022 09:05

Love Eleftheria! Beautiful and memorable!

Thera would be a lovely nickname

VerifiedBot2351 · 24/08/2022 09:19

She will get called elephant at school.

FriedasCarLoad · 24/08/2022 09:23

It's worth bearing in mind that you can't control nicknames/shortened names for many years.

So you might still end up with her being Ria, Ella or Ellie.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 24/08/2022 09:27

So many streets with this name in Greece...

I'm not keen op and I'm a complete hellenophile.

There are so many other lovely Greek names.

I really like it (and think some of you are horrifyingly rude).

Terri?
