This is a greek name I love but I am not keen on the nick names Ria, Ella, or Ellie. Can you think of any cute nick names?

I lived in Melbourne which has a massive Greek diaspora, I knew a few Effies there.

pinklavenders · 24/08/2022 09:59

She will get called elephant at school.

Shock where do you live and what sort of kids attend schools there?!

Whatisgoingonhere · 24/08/2022 10:13

Terri

vimtokisses · 24/08/2022 10:21

I think it's cruel to name a child something that people will struggle to pronounce, spell or can easily ridicule. There are so many other lovely Greek names with beautiful meanings. This isn't one of them and it's setting the poor child up for torment. As well as a lifetime of misspelling.

1/8th Greek 🤦🏼‍♀️

Thea/Theia
Antheia
Clio
Gaia
Phoebe
Artemis
Astraea

FartOutLoudDay · 24/08/2022 10:35

The Eleftherios I know is Terry so Terri would work for a girl?

dramalamma84 · 24/08/2022 15:12

El/Effie

ChagSameachDoreen · 24/08/2022 15:23

Leftie.

girlmom21 · 24/08/2022 15:24

I agree with those who think kids will call her elephant

VeryQuaintIrene · 24/08/2022 15:29

It really isn't hard to pronounce, surely? I love it. Efi would be an obvious diminutive.

She said she lives in Greece, so presumably pronunciation wont be a problem.

OP, obviously this name wouldn't go down well in the UK, but if you live in Greece and people are familiar with the name over there then go for it! Effie/Thera would be lovely nicknames too.

BiscuitLover3678 · 24/08/2022 15:50

How do you pronounce it? That might help.

Thera?

differential · 24/08/2022 18:08

@FleursSechees the OP doesn't live in Greece.

VerifiedBot2351 · 24/08/2022 18:24

@pinklavenders I’m a teacher.

Oh. She said on page 1 she's lived in Greece for a while. Maybe she meant in the past 🤔

Antarcticant · 24/08/2022 18:45

Fay

Didiplanthis · 24/08/2022 19:52

Effie or Elfie

I hope she comes back to clarify because if she means in the past it's about as relevant as her being 1/8 Greek Grin

I'm 1/8 Irish because I once drank half a Guinness 🤣

SirChenjins · 24/08/2022 20:15

Does 1/8th mean one of your great grandparents or one of your grandparents?

Crankley · 24/08/2022 20:31

It's ghastly. If you love it so much change your own name and find somethiong better for your child.

Firty · 24/08/2022 20:34

Elf

1/8 would be great grandparents surely?

Not sure I even know where my great grandparents were from.

Heckythump1 · 25/08/2022 07:56

Still nobody has enlightened us on how this name is actually pronounced! 😛

Oysterbabe · 25/08/2022 08:58

If you live in the UK and the child will live in the UK, then I think it's a pretty ridiculous name to saddle your child with based on a very tenuous 1/8th Greek heritage. If you live in Greece then fine.
What does the father think of the name?
