Hello, I'm looking for a girl's names and thought it might be nice to have one which tied in with the names of my two other daughters, which coincidentally mean bright / radiant. So thinking of anything along the lines of bright radiant, shining, light, moon, star, sun etc. Any ideas? Thanks!

Elena means shining light or the bright one in Greek

It's my favourite name. Pronounced Eh-len-ah NOT Eh-lain-ah

Pretty - worried it would be shortened to Ellie, like so many other names

I'm going to suggest Lumos.

You could start a trend...

Aurora. I know one and her NN is Rory/Rorie (no idea on spelling) but it's cute for her

Selene, Selena (moon)
Muriel (bright sea)
Roxanne (dawn)
Alba (white / dawn)

I like Alba - isn't it linked to Scotland in some way?

I was going to suggest this. I think it’s gorgeous!

I would definitely pronounce it Eh-lay-na though, not Eh-len-ah.

Sort of. Albion was old name for the island of Great Britain. Means white land…probably after the cliffs of Dover.

Yika · 21/08/2022 19:36

I think Alba is the Gaelic name for Scotland, but it has other meanings too.

I think alot of British people pronounce it that way. I'm greek so I do it the other way

Alba is the Gaelic name for Scotland but isn’t pronounced as it would be in English. It is also the Italian (and I think Spanish) word for dawn (and is pronounced just as you would think).

I’m in Scotland and only know one Alba and she’s half Spanish. I think it’s lovely.

Luredbyapomegranate · 21/08/2022 19:51

Lucienne (Or Lucy, Lucia, Luciana, Lucinda) for light

Helena / Eleanor / Elena / Leonora / Alina - shining light

Clare, Clara - bright

Astra (or Stella, Estella, Seren) for star

Celeste / Celestia / Celestine / Celestina

Selena/Selina, Selene (Sell-ee-nee) - moon

Apollonia - sun

I think Alba is the Gaelic name for Scotland, but it has other meanings too.

Yes, when the Romans pushed all the original Gaelic people of Albion north of the wall (enslaving and colonising everyone else south of the wall on the island), they called what they had conquered Britannia. Then Alba is actually what the Romans called Scotland. To the original Gaelic people, Scotland was still Albion but Scotland was the bit of it that remained free and wasn’t conquered by the Romans. Over time, the Romanised version of Albion stuck, and Alba is used to denote ancient Scotland with Britannia being ancient England.

I would rethink Elena - at least to make sure your other kids aren't named Selina or Helena or variants, because Elena has thousands of variant related names in English language

Lucy
Phoebe
it's assumed Esther means star (based on fact Esther and Mordecai names sound similar to Babylonian gods)
Lusine means moon in Armenian
Sunniva - means Sun's gift in old english, nowdays Scandi name
Gwen - meaning white blessed

BunnyFree · 21/08/2022 19:52

Soledad - sunshine in Spanish

bippo · 21/08/2022 19:55

Nina.

Tree543 · 21/08/2022 19:57

Lucia
Stella
